Here is a possibility that has not been discussed:
Lets say that we finish with the 9th worst record and the lotto balls do not fall our way.
So we are now drafting 9th ( or worse if we fall a couple of spots ). This might be the time to spring an offer sheet on a team. I am thinking of 23 year old Matt Dumba, a right-handed defenseman. Good , solid player, would be able to play next year on top pairing with Skjei, and still young enough to be part of rebuild. Tender him an offer sheet that Wild wouldn't be able/willing to match.
Even if it cost us our 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round picks----- it should be considered. We would be getting a player that might be more valuable than what we could get at 9th overall. We KNOW that he is an NHL player. We have the cap space and that would certainly jumpstart our rebuild and add a player at a premium position.

He's unknown for this board. Can someone...? |

With the 29th pick in the draft, I wouldn't mind a good player with size that maybe has a bit of Wayne Simmonds in him. It's basically just a function of where you draft these kids, and if you are looking for the home run upside guy with a particular pick or someone who will be a solid player. - Pete V
Yeah when you have as many picks in the top 93 picks, as the Rangers do, you can definitely afford to do it, especially later in the first round. Not sure he'll make it all the way to the end of the first, but I could definitely see him going between 20-25, or so. |

yeah but, it would be the 2019 draft picks that would be the compensation for signing an RFA, not this year's
even with Trouba, no less Dumba, they could be worst overall next year, it's possible, can't risk blowing their first ever first overall pick on an offer sheet |

I wouldnt trade a 1st, 2nd and 3rd for Dumba so why that (frank) would you piss another team off and give all that up |

I dunno about that, I would probably make that trade. I mean not a top-10 first, but I would absolutely trade anything north of pick #10 (or around there) plus a 2nd and 3rd for him. He turned the corner big-time this year. |

but, I don't see a need for Marc Staal on Minny unless they are looking to keep Eric happy |

The most recent CBA really put a hurt on some of those retirement contracts. Parise, Suter, etc. that Shea Weber contract is an absolute abomination now. |

I think the cap re-capture thing still kills Nashville on the Shea Weber deal
lots of hands in the cookie jar on that contract, the Flyers signed him to it |

And the Habs traded Subban for that Weber contract.
You have to wonder sometimes whether some of these GMs have any idea what they are doing.

Nice to have a franchise that basically serves as a toxic waste dump. |
