I'd agree.

He's likely to get more than that.

So what we are saying is Price is on a hometown discount with his 10 mil?

The thinking amongst most Leaf fans, is that Matthews getting $10M per season, is him taking a home town discount..
- PatC80

I agree. I think leafs go to the 3 young guys and see if they’d be willing to take a haircut and be compensated in endorsements. Nothing earth shattering where they’re grossly underpaid, but a haircut so that they can be a competitive team and bring in other players to help win championships.

No, we are not saying that at all.

Negociations with Price went exactly like this:

Bergevin: "Carey, we want you here for the remaining for your career"

Price: "Ok, but we need to agree on the price".

Bergevin: "You're our franchise player, how does 10M per year for 8 years sound?"

Price: "Wow! 10M? That's..."

Bergevin: "FINE 10.5! Sign here"

As much as 8 million a year would be like a dream it's not realistic. 10 to 11 Million is still a discount.
- Aaron_85

For the record, my example of Toronto vs. Arizona wasn't a suggestion for Matthews. It was more of a "for any player" example.

No way in hell Matthews signs anywhere for $8 milly.

This wouldn't surprise me. I think some of the comments made me think the expectation was significantly more than a 'haircut'

If it's so easy then why isn't Hyman doing it?
- mgriffen

Hyman's game is completely different...his job is to get the puck to the udder 2 guys

Jvr doesnt really forecheck/backcheck and rarely drives the net...hes good at what he does but is that enough for $7m? If we had 3 jvr's on rhe same line, not sure we ever get out of our own end without icing it

You're acting like there's only two places in NHL, Toronto and the (frank)ing desert.

Montreal, New-York, Boston, Washington, Dallas etc.. could all make a similar pitch to a high end player.

And pretty sure Matthew's agent doesn't need the Leafs to go see Nike and tell em "how about we make a deal".

- Scabeh

I kinda said exactly that in a post below.

Although maybe take Dallas off that list.

The Leafs have done exactly this on at least two occasions I know of.

1. Bryan McCabe. He explicitly told them that he loved Toronto, loved the Leafs, couldn't possibly sign a new contract until a medical condition with his wife was resolved. So what did the Leafs do? Kept upping the offer.

2. There is actual footage of Tie Domi's agent negotiating with the Leafs for one of his contracts. He's on the phone, and the Leafs throw out a comparison to another Leaf (the guy had more points than Domi, so Domi wasn't nearly as valuable). The agent tells them to compare even strength points.

Next scene, Domi comes into the agent's office. Agent puts a contract in front of Domi. Domi starts laughing and says, "Let's get this done."

It's the 50 years of futility that unite us all.

Yes, yes they are.

But Molson came out and said Bergevin wasn't gonna get fired sooooo we have kinda accepted our fate of misery for at least the next year.

Lots of owners say that. They could be waiting until the off-season

They have up until draft day.

After that, it's just Bergevin digging a deeper hole.

I have seen this. The best part is when Domi asks his agent 'And this is in US?? Where do I sign?'.

And guess who handled the negotiation for the Leafs???
