What if ScotiaBank throws some money at him? - PatC80
Again, Matthews and his agent don't need to take a discount to get these deals, they'll get them on their own |

Hey kid:
- Go to Arizona, sign a $10 milly per year deal (doubtful they end up paying you in full, because, you know, Arizona - might want to ask Gretzky about that) and top up your salary with an additional $12,000 in endorsement deals for the local Blimpy's
- or -
- Sign with Toronto for $8 million, and for the first 10 games of the season, I'll put your agent in the MLSEL Executive Suite before, during and after games to hobnob with Toronto's financial elite. You'll have $6 million per year in endorsements before they serve the chicken fingers in the first intermission. - Atomic Wedgie
You're acting like there's only two places in NHL, Toronto and the (frank)ing desert.
Montreal, New-York, Boston, Washington, Dallas etc.. could all make a similar pitch to a high end player.
And pretty sure Matthew's agent doesn't need the Leafs to go see Nike and tell em "how about we make a deal". |

lemme guess, the stick broke on the first shot, the tape was A+, drill bits were previously opened and possibly missing a few, and the spoon just won't hold up in the wash. - mgriffen
The stick was a quality ukrainian piece of lumber that at least has another 2 or 3 games left on asphalt
The tape is pretty good
The bits were unopened and actually had to get a sales rep to get them out from behind the glass
The quality of the slotted spoon is TBD but it's lagostina so I don't think it'll be a one and done kitchen implement |

The thing is also that I don't recall of a player making significantly less than market value to play there and make x in advertising money.
Stamkos said no, ultimately. So is it really an effective approach? |

Just don't let that sucker soak in the sink. It'll split in no time, doesn't matter the brand. I worked at a couple CTs a while back and I can tell ya, the sticks do not get treated well, but that's the carbons. They used to get jammed into a shopping cart and stuff would be piled on top of them come the fall. |

Matthews is going to get paid, PERIOD.
And his agent will get him the endorsement deals TOO.

Read my further comment where I consider 10 million a discount. Where I also state I'm being a homer and wish it would happen for less. |

I think he gets 80 mill for 8 years.
Let's not forget that as part of the Leafs meeting with Stamkos they had Canadian Tire present offering a big endorsement deal. |

And these grossly underpaid players are whom exactly? This could very well happen and sure as poop probably has, I admit it, but you think Matthews is going to take less than fair value on his contract? I sure as poop don't.
But really, who are these players that are taking significant discounts and raking in advertising dollars? - RickJames77
I'm not saying "grossly underpaid."
What I am saying is that if Toronto is smart (and Boston, and New York), they will make presentations that emphasize that if money is a huge factor, the size of market/size of interest in hockey of these cities means that the salary from your hockey team isn't the end of the story.
I'm a pro-player guy. I wouldn't advocate any player giving a discount - your career is too short.
But if my advice to every player is to grab as much money as you can because life is short and you are one knee injury away from retirement, well, maybe going to Toronto for $1 million less per year on your NHL contract is the better way to go - because you'll end up making more money in the end.
Tie Domi - a goon who retired 12 years ago - still does endorsements in Toronto.
Do you think Link Gaetz is appearing on commercials in San Jose today? |

I think the part people are forgetting is cities like Toronto, Montreal, Chicago have massive populations.
Who the (frank) watches hockey in Arizona as an example? Carolina has a massive market?
Matthews is a fantastic player but the reason he gets a deal, and a bigger one from Nike is because EVERYONE in Toronto is watching him and sees the commercials. If he's in Arizona he's not getting the larger cities in the East full of kids.
Sure LA is a large city but it's LA. How many kids grow up wanting to play hockey? |

From what I understand, the Leafs ended up pulling the deal so that they could allocate that money towards Tavares, Doughty and McDavid. |

It didn't work for Stamkos for multiple reasons. Matthews is an RFA here and not a UFA. Tampa also had tax incentives for the State he plays 41 games in. |

This is definitely a factor, but at an 8.5M contract the tax savings should have been easily offset by these large endorsement deals and then some.
He probably just wanted to stay put so maybe he is not a good example on either side. |
