Yup. 30 goals gets you 6 at least. He's money on the PP. - Corn_Logg
I called 33 goals for him ages ago...I may be in the ballpark. |

I certainly would have no issue with that at all - probably isn't enough, he rarely gets hurt, so he could be effective the entire term...easily. - Woderwick
He'll get more, for sure. Something stupid like 7.3, and it won't be here. But if the Leafs couldn't squeeze that 6M in, I'd be surprised |

And as mentioned 6 mil today and 6 mil in six years will be a big difference on the cap.
If JVR took 6x6, you should like it. I wouldn't do much more than that though, because as you said, he's only good for offense. But he's fairly consistent, and would be worth it, even at 34. That's not exactly retirement age. - UsernameUnknown
I just think it'll hurt their cap flexibility too much. Him on a long term deal would be unmovable if his play declined. I'd want him on a short term deal for sure since his 30 goals are nearly impossible to replace but I'm not convinced he's the kind of guy you risk a long term deal with.
Now Tavares... |

Anyone's play can decline
And if it did it would be in the final few years, and he wouldn't be usless, a team could move him out along with a pick.
People overthink FA signings way too much |

Leafs or a team in the NJ,NY area is my guess |

Can't wait until we don't sign Marner after his RFA contract is up because he would be 34 in 6 years |

You're just being silly. I know you know the difference between signing a star player long-term and signing guys like Okposo, Lucic, Oshie, Callahan, Eriksson, or JVR to that kind of term. |

Seems like a guy who likes to be around family and friends.
He always ops to go home to NJ or Minny on breaks over sunny vacays with the team. Could totally see him in NJ, especially with the direction of the team. |

Well (frank), you take Tavares all day. I'd take JVR behind the barn myself if that were the case.
I don't think JVR is much of a risk though. Not like he relys on speed or plays a physical game. No reason he can't do what he does now (literally stand in front and score) at age 34.
I don't think the leafs will sign him though, so really a moot point. |

Actually I do
I question if you do
JVR 0.33 goals per game
Oshie 0.28 goals per game
Eriksson 0.28 goals per game
Okposo 0.25 goals per game
Lucic 0.24 goals per game
Callahan 0.25 goals per game

So what's your argument here? Because JVR scores more goals than these guys he's a Marner-tier player instead of your typical good UFA that is a complimentary piece but not a star? |

Yeah. If the Leafs think they have an honest chance at Tavares, then I'd understand trying to get him first, and then taking JVR as a consolation prize, although if they go that route, he may sign elsewhere or cost more than if they simply try to sign him right away.
I also agree that his style may not decline quickly. It's not like he relies on speed or hard physical play. He just parks his fat ass in front of the net and fights for position before chipping home those juicy rebounds, redirects, and tips. |
