He saw what was coming, and turned his back to the play with control of the puck at the last second; Rust could have chipped it along the end boards and protected himself but he chose to draw contact that he knew would look controversial by the vague standards today. Rust deserves no sympathy and in fact should be forced to stay out of the game for trying to manipulate the game with poor sportsmanship. This is one small example of a growing problem.
