How far away do you think we are? One top 2 defender added to this team would make us legitimate contenders. Gotta be close anyway. Not alot of holes left on the team to fill in the next few years.

The Leafs are terrible defensively, give up way too many shots and rely way too heavily on Andersen on a nightly basis. They also have a problem on the wing and at center when JVR and Bozak leave as UFAs because they're probably not coming back but need to not only be replaced but also improved upon because they're defensively bad and offensively inconsistent.

The Leafs are still a few years away from being a more balanced team that plays a style of hockey that works during the playoffs. Their core players still need to mature and take the next step and put up bigger numbers with more consistent efforts.

But there's nothing wrong with any of that and there's nothing they can't fix or improve upon with time and patience. They're in the best position they've been in decades.
