maybe, maybe not. But we should just shut it down trade everybody and hope 4 or 5 years from now when our 2nd round picks develop and Matthews Marner and Nylander are eating up all our cap that we will then be ready to compete for a Stanley cup. - HealthyScratch6

Tampa Bay is slowing down but the Leafs are just going to keep speeding up and hammer through everybody, Plekanec leading the battering ram. - Unholy_Goalie
Somebody’s gonna win the cup. It might as well be us. By us I mean the Leafs, not really sure who your team is. |

Just gonna ignore Hainsey, huh? - Steven_Seagull
What was it they traded for Hainsey? Wasn't a second round pick and a prospect was it? |

That's pie in the sky. You don't know what the price is for a top pair defenseman like Mcdonagh. Maybe the Rangers want one of Marner or Nylander. You're not trading your core guys. You're not robbing Peter to pay Paul. It makes no sense.
In any trade, you have to give to get. Other teams know the Leafs need a top 4 defenseman. Lou is playing poker right now.
The one player who will have to go in any trade for a guy like McDonagh is Kapanen. Are you willing to give him up? If njt then you're not getting him. Plus you'd likely have to add a first and another prospect.
These are much tougher assets to lose. But if it fills a long term need then you do it. Guys like Pleks are pawns. Small potatoes. You can always recoup draft picks after the first round.
I don't see what the big deal is trading away an extra second round draft pick for a 4th line centre which is actually closer to being a 3rd round pick.
It solves a present need and you still have a first and a second round pick which you can either keep or use as currency for the top 4 defenseman you still need. - gergeswillems
Pie in the sky is thinking Boyle or Plekanec makes a real difference and wins you a Cup. Reality is, they're 4th line centers who cost you younger, cheaper, better prospects. But, one day, when the price needs to be paid, if you have more top prospects because you kept your draft picks, it just makes it that much easier to acquire the top end players you need and more importantly, it allows you to do it when the time is right. |

Okay, worse case scenario, they miss the playoffs last year. They still make it this year. Still get the experience. They're 20 years old. Nothing will happen to them if they don't make the playoffs immediately.
Makes no difference except for the prospect we missed out on to add a guy who played 27 games then left. - Unholy_Goalie
Then they're a year behind. They've already got one year of experience and they're going on their second. It's invaluable. Otherwise you get dejection, disinterest, and complacency like what's going on in Buttalo.
I hate the turtleneck as much as the next guy but he's a 4th line improvement. |

I just searched actual deadline day but they got two other guys they didn't use.
Also, the Penguins were in a different boat than the Leafs, as explained 100 times before. They have the best player in the world, in his prime. That's a completely different scenario than the Leafs are in. |

So the penguins should have stayed out of the trade market the last two years and this year too? - shack67
did they trade 2nd rounders on 35 year old 4c? did they trade for anyone that made an impact? and if we were cup favorites like they were, you trade for help, big difference. we are still a very young team. trying to speed up the process is not a good idea. we only did this for 50 years and 0 cups.... lets keep doing that because it worked so well for us. |

so let me get this straight.
we had two picks in the 2nd round.
the one we traded will be either dermott bergeron or subban.
the one we kept will be kenny ryan, brad ross or jesse blacker.
or
we keep that pick from the plekanec trade and we get a real impact player by throwing in martin polak along with it to land Doughty.
did i do this right?

He's a Leaf...an old one so he sucks. Marleau sucks too cuz he's a Leaf...an old one, and he wasn't drafted by the Leafs either. And Andersson - don't get me going - can't wait for Sparks to take over next year., cuz he'll be cheap and they can trade Andersson for picks...lots and lots of picks. 50 player contracts (frank) that we get 150 |

I didn't say trade everybody. I said trade the pending UFAs whom you are going to lose anyway, promote Marlies and increase prospect ice time and don't give up draft picks for old, Hab trash and pray it will win you a Cup.
Matthews, Marner and Nylander won't eat up the entire cap. They're going to get bridge deals. They're very good but they're not 12 million dollars per year players either. |
