It was one pick. Boston gave up multiple picks
- PatC80

(frank) Boston. I hope they trade all their picks. And in a couple years, their current players will be too old and their system won't be able to replace them. Which means we pass them and become the contender that they and Tampa Bay are today. Bide your time and keep building your system instead of being a pretender with sacks of poop like Plekanec.

You told me I didn't have to worry about bullpoop trades like this. You lied. YOU LIED!

Why would he re-sign with the Habs? you think he doesn't like playing in the playoffs?

I read somewhere that he already has a contract in place to go back to the Habs next year.

(frank) the Leafs players. "Thanks for the work you've put in to what could be a record breaking season, we're trading away some of your team mates who helped this become reality for picks that might be NHLers five years from now."

Nash has 3 times as many goals, he's younger, he's bigger, he kills penalties, he plays on the PP; he's better than Plekanec in almost every way.

I don't care Boston overpaid because their future doesn't matter to me but they got the better player.

- Unholy_Goalie

Wtf does younger matter for a rental?

The guy is invisible on the ice. He’s had 1 assist against the Leafs in the last two years... and that matters when you consider that these teams are likely to meet in the first or second round.

He’s got more goals, but not many more points, despite having a more offensive role... and he doesn’t match up defensively against a guy like Plekanec.

He’s probably on par at this point in their careers, but plays a less important role.

5th in the league is not good enough. Gotta be top 3.

You're trading the guys who aren't coming back next year anyway and you're replacing them with Marlies who earned a chance to prove themselves. You're also giving guys like Kapanen and Brown more ice-time who have earned it and who would be happy to prove themselves at a fraction of the price.

Matters for health and performance. Plekanec is in significant steady decline every year. He's terrible.

Keep the picks and prospects and continue filling holes from within until the Leafs are in a better position to contend in the near future.
- Unholy_Goalie

True the Leafs could be drafting one hell of a center with that pick and now the Habs will but they may choose a winger that doesn't pan out and gets traded for the 7th rnd pick 2025.

I get it I would of kept the pick

Dermott was a 2nd round pick. I'd rather have another Dermott (and he's not even that amazing, he's just a good prospect) than 20-25 games of Plekanec.

Boston gave up 5 pieces for 1 player. We gave up 2 players that were staying on the Marlies and one of our two 2nd rd picks. What is not to like about the Plekanec trade ?

JVR and Komarov could be replaced pretty easily. Who's playing centre when Bozak is traded? I'm not even a fan but he's playing a role.

he would of been a 1st but the Leafs figured he'd slip to the 2nd rnd round which he did.

What does a team do that has its “system full of prospects” say over a three year period? I mean you can only have a certain amount on the payroll and on entry level contracts. Every year is a new draft year with 7 rounds. Then there is free agents from abroad eg khl. Somewhere your gonna have to deal with it and deal some away as you can NOT keep them all. What do other teams do in such a situation? Take a stab at it. Get some depth players? Land a big fish. Leafs are still in a good spot. 24 hours from now we may know more as to what Lou has for us.

If they trade Bozak for a 1st round pick, the Plekanec deal may be forgiven. Maybe.

But, they could promote Gauthier, move Nylander or Marner to C and make Kadri the 3rd line C. Kapanen replaces Komarov, Johnsson and Brown can replace JVR.

This was my point earlier today. There's room for more additions. Let's wait to see the seasons final product.

I wouldn't say the Leafs have that problem yet. Their best prospects are playing with the Leafs but the rest of the system could still use some more help. The Leafs don't have a #1 D sitting in the system. They have promising top 4 D but nobody that you can safely say "that guy is the next Shea Weber". They don't have prospects that they could trade for somebody like Karlson and not lose anybody significant off their roster. That's the type of surplus you want to have and can achieve by acquiring as many picks as possible and making every one count.

You make that big move when your players are in their prime, you're leading your division and you're playing a style of hockey that succeeds in the playoffs. All of those things will happen in a couple years but that's not the case right now.

Plekanec sucks and the Leafs are better off having the 2nd round pick. Plekanec already has his (frank)ing contract and his fresh turtleneck with the Habs ready to be signed. Waste of a 2nd round pick.
- Unholy_Goalie

i agree, second year in a row doing the same bs as the last 50 years, where has that gotten us? we were finally starting to get a good young team together and just got to go back to rushing. slight improvement for 4c.. will he be the great add to win us the cup? not even close, just a waste! we got Dermott, Bracco, Grunstrom, Korskov and Rasanen with second rounders, would you trade any of them for a 35 year old 4c? i sure as hell wouldnt. just stupid!

Where is Brian Boyle right now? Playing for another team. 27 games of Boyle for a 2nd round pick and a 1st round exit. Worth it?
