Brassard? Meh. Not for what Pittsburgh gave up. - PatC80
He's also not a rental. And the Penguins don't have to care about 1st round picks. They're trying to win the Cup every year and they should be. |

Rychel and Valiev will probably never play in the NHL but that 2nd round pick, if used properly, could become something useful. I'm just saying, in general, stop trading picks and prospects. It's not time for that poop yet. - Unholy_Goalie
You could make the argument it is exactly the time for it. Augment the roster while the team's best players are still on entry level contracts.
If the Leafs start tossing around picks and prospects then I will start to get as nervous as you seem to be. But with the pipeline full of talent, I am ok with the Leafs trading away what will likely be the later of the two 2nd round picks they have for this draft.
I don't think Plekanec is a massive addition, but I do believe he is an upgrade over Moore. |

How mad will you be if the Leafs still lose in the playoffs and that 2nd round pick turns out to be an amazing player one day?
It's easy to play this game. - Unholy_Goalie
Don't you know it's inappropriate to answer a question with a question?
Anyway, I agree about picks are great. However the Leafs have a lot of prospects. To the point they probably can't sign all the ones they want. This is okay.
This won't be known for 3 to 5 years on the outcome of this trade. |

They kind of just won two in a row and have the best player on the planet in his prime. Maybe the two best players on the planet. So yeah, they've earned it. |

The Leafs are 2nd in the NHL on the PK. Didn't have to piss away a 2nd round pick to improve it. - Unholy_Goalie
now they could be #1 on the pk. at home and one the road. |

Tampa, Boston, and Pittsburgh - that’s it. Forget about the 5th place Leafs. 5 more years. Robbie Earl. Go Bruins. |

Not for the Leafs it wouldn't be. Bruins can waste as much of their future as they want on rentals, I don't give a poop. But Nash is a more useful player than Plekanec is if you're just comparing the two directly. - Unholy_Goalie
Is he, though?
Nash is just marginally better offensively now, not as good defensively, and Plekanec plays a much more important position.
And then breaking down the actual deals... Boston gave away a guy putting up much better offensive numbers in order to get Nash, as well as pile in picks+prospects. Not exactly loading up.
Leafs are on pace for a franchise record season. It might not be a bad idea to try and build on that. |

The Leafs are about to lose a few guys as free agents and the prospects in the system are going to replace them and those prospects need to be replaced.
Also, you can never have too many draft picks and/or prospects. Because if you make every single pick count, you solve your own problems internally OR build up enough talent that you can trade it for something you really need like a #1 D for example.
Pissing away picks for over the hill, 35 year old Habs trash isn't getting this franchise any closer to a Cup today or tomorrow. |

Don’t try to win the cup unless you’ve already done it and have the best players in the planet.

Nash goes to Boston they lose to Buffalo... Nash a minus with 5 shots... not a sterling way to kick off all these moves - Roadrunner75
Nash played well. The goal he was on for was a lucky bounce for Buttalo and Nash also hit the post.
Khudobin also wasn't very good. |

Nash has 3 times as many goals, he's younger, he's bigger, he kills penalties, he plays on the PP; he's better than Plekanec in almost every way.
I don't care Boston overpaid because their future doesn't matter to me but they got the better player. |
