Leafs should try to get JVR and Bozak signed. They can be useful, for this year and next, then deal their contracts, if you need cap space. JVR: $6M x 5. Bozak: $3M X 3. The Leafs can either make a deal with Nylander for 7 years, or bridge him and pay him less for 3. Marner and Matthews will get their payday a year from now, so the ability to keep and use JVR and Bozak for another year, then move the assets if they can't afford them any longer.


Another item. There must be another shoe to drop, with the Leafs holding on to 2 or 3 professional contract spots open. Maybe a defenseman and a salary dump to make it work. In Lou we trust. I don't see him grabbing Plekanec from the Habs, if they don't intend on upgrading their back end. Having centre depth and a stronger defense, make them quasi contenders.

So we have a bunch of centres. Bozak or Leo getting dealt? Can Plekanec hit an open net if Kap sends him a pass on a 2 on 1?

Agree. I don't understand how people can look at their record, especially recently, and their play against the top threats in Tampa and Boston, and not think they have a shot. The key to winning is to have as many solid shots as you can while your window is open. I think this year is the first of those. Degrading the team now just to try to wait until you are first overall at the trade deadline doesn't make any sense to me.

I feel like some Leaf fans just can't quite accept that they are legit contenders now, and that's understandable because it is a bizarro world thing, but I feel like building for two years down the road at this point is making the perfect the enemy of the good.

If they can get a king's ransom of a 1st rounder + top prospect(s) you should consider doing the deal. You could then flip those assets to fill the top pairing d scenario from above.

The worst thing that could happen to the Leafs is JVR walking after an early playoff exit.

All angles should be considered and the "window" should be viewed in its entirety -- not just this year's shot.

Trading JVR would not send a "rebuild / retool" message.
