Leafs are near the top of the NHL with JVR (and Bozak for that matter who is playing much better by the way). So let's send the message to the team that has worked their asses off to get there by saying "You're not good enough - we're passing on this years playoffs". Guess I'm just too loyal to the guys that got them there. Good thing I'm not an NHL GM.

Agree. I don't understand how people can look at their record, especially recently, and their play against the top threats in Tampa and Boston, and not think they have a shot. The key to winning is to have as many solid shots as you can while your window is open. I think this year is the first of those. Degrading the team now just to try to wait until you are first overall at the trade deadline doesn't make any sense to me.

I feel like some Leaf fans just can't quite accept that they are legit contenders now, and that's understandable because it is a bizarro world thing, but I feel like building for two years down the road at this point is making the perfect the enemy of the good.

Nope. The 5th overall Leafs aren’t true Cup contenders, so they should just trade the UFAs. In fact, they should just throw in the towel and forfeit the rest of the season. No point playing as they guaranteed to lose.

Probably not - who knows for sure but I don't want them to turn their backs on the players who have them top 5 in the league either. I think it sends a bad message.
There's probably lots of options - lots of unknowns - lots of opportunity and lots potential hindsight conversations in our future. I'd go with what we know.
We have no idea what JVR will want to stay, what Bozak wants to stay. Whether Kap is a 10 goal scorer or 30. Whether Dermott is a top 2 D or playing way over his head. Matthews may decide he hates hockey and takes up bob sledding or curling instead.
