Hedman and Doughty off the top of my head.
- AdamFrench

Neither in my opinion have come close to Karlsson

And both were top 5 picks

And both are playing on stacked teams

And doughty won the Norris on a year where Karlsson should've won.

Both are obviously great dmen but Karlsson is in a different echelon.

He is the closest thing to Orr we've seen of this generation.

Can't say the same about doughty or hedman

How bad can things be for melnyk at this point?

Despite the building not selling out every game, he must have made a killing last year, going to the conf. finals.

EDIT: playing three big market teams too, which I imagine would effect viewership revenue.

I think in the summer, it could be from a position of strength. He really has to make it a point to include as many teams as possible and get the best return....

that said, I feel like this 1 trade would make me such an enemy to Melnyk. I couldn't watch the team but something would need to be done

The longer you wait, the price goes down. Trade now and u get him for 2 playoff runs. Summer time you get him for 82 games plus whatever playoff games u get. Hes made it clear hes going to ufa. I dont think the list of teams in ths summer will be as great as you think when teams know hes a rental or the amount of roster juggling you will have to do if you do sign him to a 11-12m dollar extension

They are negotiating from a point of weakness... but rest assured they will get a good return

While I waiver back and forth on this, I think Sens fans should not be too upset to see him traded. It really is time to rebuild. Phaneuf and Brassard out, maybe Ek and Ryan... Stick with Stone and Hoffman, chabot to anchor your D for years to come and hopefully you restock some prospects and picks from the EK deal.

I think trading Karlsson could be a blessing in disguise. His best days could be behind him and he'll be making twice as much as he is now going into his late 30s. Then again, he could very well win a couple more Norris's. It's difficult to gauge.

While a package for Karlsson may be satisfactory, it won't address the need to replace the franchise player. In my opinion, they will be lucky to get a player or two be legitimate NHLers. That's the deal with getting prospect and picks loaded returns.

It's disappointing that it has come to this. Would be nice to have a franchise level player not leave/traded with drama surrounding it.

It would be nice to just trade him because that's the best thing to do when your team blows. But no, we have to have Eugene garbage, culture divide amongst players, and the media having a field day.

We're so close to Dahlin lol. Gonna need him to replace Karlsson apparently.

When Dahlin needs a raise in 3 years, will Eugene ship him off too?

That's a valid question ... unless they move to a downtown arena, I don't see the team staying in Ottawa. It's a question of fan support and revenues.

I'm convinced, a lot more fans from Eastern Ottawa and Gatineau would go see a lot more games at LeBreton Flats instead of having to suffer traffic to and from Kanata on weekday nights ... real mind numbing experience.

I live across the river in Gatineau ... and even though I'm not a Sens fan (I'm an ancient geezer set in my ways), if the team was in LeBreton Flats I would probably go see them a few times a year. They could try to convert me but it's a tough sell at my age.

More importantly, they would probably generate a lot more interest in the younger generation of fans ... one of my nephew was a Sens fan for a while but his interest in the team seems pretty much gone as he gets older. When a team loses the next generation of potential fans, they should question what they are doing wrong.

Add some things to do nearby (bars, restaurants) instead of empty farm lands and you would have something to attract the younger crowd (ie: RedBlacks model).

Whoever decided to put a rink in the middle of nowhere was a moron without any business sense, no wonder the team now has to tarp off the whole upper bowl. Sheesh!

I read this quote below from Spector's Hockey this morning about events at last nights Sens game, it was the comment about a fan getting tossed for filming security taking away signs. I seriously question if that is even legal.

"Things are also starting to get ugly between team owner Eugene Melnyk and some unhappy Senators fans, as arena security confiscated some homemade signs critical of Melnyk before the game. One fan was also ejected when they attempted to film the encounter"

I think a lot of what you said made sense but I HIGHLY disagree with the fact that he's made it clear he's going to UFA. He said he wants to be paid what's he's worth. Reading between the lines, I get the strong feeling (from comments made by many) that the owner thought he could get Karlsson on a massive discounted deal. Karlsson is worth AT LEAST $10m for the next 6-7 years. If I was being as objective as possible, I would say 7 years @10.5m is a very fair contract for him given his market value to a team and the current state of affairs.

I highly doubt he gets $11m or 11.5m

If they can get that much. If we trade Karlsson (which I still think they can mend the relationship and sign him here in Ottawa). But if he is traded we better be getting like half a team lol

Don't know much about Ryan Lindgren but the 1st is good. But I like the Brassard return A LOT if they can turn around and trade Ian Cole for a 2nd

I wonder if Karlsson has actually said "yes I am open to resigning" or not
