Necessary moves. I believe Smith and Pag should also be moved if you want to rebuild/retool.

My plan is still that Karlsson signs here long term, but this week has put severe doubt in my mind about that.

I agree Columbus needs help, mayby pageau cole for a 2018 first and prospect

I’m sure the price Dorion is asking reflects Karlsson’s pre ankle value (he has to) and how can anyone pay that? He’s still a good defenseman but he’s not what he used to be. Maybe he’ll bounce back next season but that’s such a huge gamble when Dorion wants you to basically gut your farm.
- Jeffmt

It's a bit of a gamble I guess. All injuries/recovery comes with that though. The combination of the injured, missing training camp, contract media garbage, and a crap team just has the makings for a crummy season for any superstar.

To think the price should come down on a superstar player like Karlsson purely because of a poor season is wishful thinking. Even if his ridiculously good days are in fact behind him. On a half decent team, he is still an elite player.

If this potential move is a hockey move and not a budgetary move, a team will have to pony up. Just the way it works with a superstar.

It's actually scary how good he could have been had he not had the first ankle injury via Matt Cooke which I think Eugene is still investigating.

Actually, the radio said that Dorion hasn't set a price and that he isn't shopping him, but is willing to listen to offers. I know that is often just semantics.

It could be that teams called, and tested the waters and found out quickly that they were not in the ballpark because Dorion really is only trading him for a ridiculous return.

Oilers will pony up. Theyre desperate and a nutjob is GM. Im sure they were ready to throw a lot at Seabrook; this should top that easily.

Lightning or Bruins are the other parties; I suspect they may make a reactionary trade now that the Pens added to their riches. Lightning D would be stacked with EK and they have prospects galore to trade. Problem would obviously be if Brian Burkes truculent whipping boy must be included as well.

i except, or at least hope, that the return from either of those 2 teams would have to be higher. to trade the best player in franchise history to a divisional foe.....you had better get a king's ransom.

as for the brassard trade, i'm fine with it. hopefully they can flip cole for like a late 2nd or something.....guys a pretty decent d-man.

right now spatso is planning who his next favourite team will be. given his record i say the sabres or the hawks. the nucks are also a strong candidate

if they "melnyk up" a karlsson trade.....i'll be doing the same thing.

if they get a poopty return on karlsson, whether it be through dorion's incompetence or because they wanted to dump extra salary in the deal to save the asshat owner some money.....i will literally be looking for a new team to cheer for

I'm wavering on whether or not they should trade him now if the offers haven't been good.

He isn't at his highest selling value right now. What if he returns to form next year, the return could be astronomical if they still feel they can't re-sign him.

I'd like to see them trade for Kane and RNH. I think both have low trade value right now and could be had fairly easy.

I'd still keep Hoffman, Stone, Karlsson, Chabot, etc

There is a whole list of tradeable players we have like Smith, JGP (although I'd want to keep him), Oduya, Ceci, etc

even if he returns to form next year, he's a rental. and i'm fairly convinced that a lot of his "decline' has to do with the fact that he's playing on a terrible team. you put him in tampa right now and he's probably top 5 in league scoring.

if you get karlsson this year, you get 2 playoff runs with him at a 6.5 mil cap hit...as opposed to just one next year.

they definitely get more for him this year then they do next year.....IMO

i'd like to win the lottery, have a 3some with scarlett johanssen and mila kunis, and travel to outerspace..........

as long as melnyk owns this team they will NEVER put winning before $$, which is exactly what they'd be doing acquiring those guys

Won't happen, they're trying to get rid of salary and loading up on draft picks (young players have lower salaries).

They're trying to sell hope to the fans until they move to LeBreton Flat if it ever gets built ... not a bad plan (from their point of view) considering the poor financial situation they're currently in. Sens fans will have to suck it up for a few years.

PS: I wish our own GM (Habs) would go on full rebuild mode myself as we're going nowhere fast with our currents bunch of talentless bums.

Honeslty, don't know why everyone thinks Ottawa lost this deal.
They get a first, and a good goalie prospect. Something they'll need with Anderson getting older

- AngryWhiteMale

I'd actually suggest that it's a near-perfect example of the kind of trade they should be making right now... a 1st round pick, a 3rd round pick, a very solid goalie prospect, and most likely another mid-round pick when they trade Cole... plus a full $5M of cap space, and a meaningful opportunity for one of White or Brown to contribute in the near future. If neither is ready, then Pageau can step up to the 2nd line role as he has done before. If they can trade another piece like Smith, and then convert both Oduya bad Cole into mid-round picks, I'm not sure how much better then could be situated heading into a key summer in terms of major contract extensions.

Could Brassard to Pens increase Karlssons trade value? Pittsburgh just massively upgraded their team, so this might put more pressure on Tampa to upgrade as well, meaning the price for Karlsson could have just gone up right?

If they trade Karlsson, which appears to be almost a certainty now, this will be a burn it to the ground rebuild. We are headed to the cap floor. Ottawa will be making trades like the Datsyuk trade to Arizona so that we can go below the floor in terms of actual dollars spent. Saving $30M USD a year converts to about 7500 expensive season seats. Melnyk will be willing to take the hit on attendance.

The message to Sens fans will be that they couldn't take on a $12Mx8 contract for Karlsson and compete with Toronto, Boston, Tampa and the other heavyweights in the East. That is actually a fair assessment. The Bryan Murray era did not yield enough top end talent via the draft to be a top contender.

Expect Duchene and Hoffman to be dealt next year. The loss of the first round pick in the Duchene trade will hurt. My hope is that we are high enough in the standings that we give it up this year. I am expecting a rough 2018-2019 season.

If you trade all of your good players you can get like 8 first rounders for next year. But seriously, you would be better off selling the team to Quebec City and getting a new expansion team in Ottawa. Look how good VGN made out!

I'm just kidding, this is terrible. If this is the last player sent out, maybe Sens bounce back next year? Tampa Bay has some bad contracts, and alternate year to year from powerhouse to missing the playoffs.

Apparently a lot of teams calling about Cole. Hopefully they can start a bidding war.

Cole will be gone, and hopefully Oduya.

Sens will be a much younger team going forward.

I asked before but no one answered. Can the league force EM to sell? In if you franchise a business and don't do a good job the company can force you out. I wonder if the NHL is the same?

At this point there is no way EM can win fans back unless he shuts his mouth, spends to the cap and resigns Karlsson, Stone, Duchene and Hoffman over the next few years and even then I think it's a long shot that fans would forgive him.

Can Melnyk be attached to that rocket with Burrows? It's one thing to have a bad owner, but when fans of your rival team (Leafs) are saying Senators fans deserve better is pretty disheartening.

Hughes is currently the top ranked prospect for the 2019 draft.
