Correct. And the rulebook doesn't specify that you have to actually play the puck with your stick for that to be a penalty either.

He kicked it, he played the puck.

I don't think it. I don't pretend to know what they are planning. I fear it.

Absolutely. Clear interference.

But stick checks are legal.

For franks sakes, I teach them in practices.

- Atomic Wedgie

Oh I agree.

I think it was a make up call though.

One guy played the puck with a broken stick.
- burn

He kicked it. He didn't touch the puck with his stick. In the spirit of the rule, it's pretty stupid he got a penalty. But it's still a penalty. Just like a guy letting go of his stick is pretty stupid but he would have been gone on a break-away if Matthews didn't do it. That's why they both got penalties.

What spirit of the rule? The rule says you can't play with a broken stick, he kicked it >>> he made a play with a broken stick in his hand. That is the excact rule word for word.

Spirit of the rule is that you actually use the (frank)ing broken stick. Holding a broken stick gives you zero advantage at kicking a puck. But it's still a penalty because of how it's written.

I'm pretty sure it's that they don't want guys holding onto broken sticks for safety reasons..

No.

The rule is the rule, there is no spirt.

(a) Any player whose stick is broken must drop his stick prior to participating in the play. A player or goalkeeper shall be allowed reasonable time to be aware that the stick is broken. A minor penalty for an equipment violation shall be assessed for participating in play with a broken stick.

No where does it say anything about playing it with the broken stick.

Didn't look like he planned on hanging on to it because he threw it as soon as he kicked the puck to his teammate.

It doesn't matter if he played the puck or not.

The rule is if he "...participate(d) in the game..."

It sucks but it’s still a rule. You have to drop the stick right away when it’s broken. Clear as day.

Stick check is apart of the game. Nothing wrong with the play.

Not if the guy is behind you, about to go on a break-away. They're both penalties, that's why they both got them.

Still a stick check. Who cares if the guy is in front of you.

It was a makeup call. That’s it.

If I am a defenceman and I break my stick giving my winger a pass, and then I skate leisurely to the bench holding a broken stick while my winger goes on a breakaway, it's a penalty.

Still knocked the stick out of his hands and denied him a breakaway.

It was a penalty.
