A 3 way deal that could work for all teams. Could make an adjustment with a depth player or prospect:

To Ottawa

T. Johnson [6YR 5m]
M. Sergachev
C. Foote
B. Howden
C. Ingram
B. Coburn [1YR 3.7m]

To Tampa

B. Ryan [4YR 5.8m] - 20% retained
E. Karlsson [1YR 3.25m]- 50% retained
D. Brassard [1YR 5m]
R. McDonagh [1YR 4.7m]

To NY Rangers

R. Callahan [2YR 5.8m]
A. Burrows [1YR 2.5m]
TB 2018 1st
TB 2019 1st +[2nd if TB wins cup either year]

I heard Alfredsson was paid $100,000 last year as an Advisor. This summer Melnyk told him he was cutting that to $50,000. Alfredsson was so insulted he quit on the spot. He let the franchise save face by publicly saying he 'wanted to spend more time with family'.

Let me know any other owner that would make an insulting offer like that to the team's all time franchise player.

That was all Karlsson needed to hear to know he would not be extending his career in Ottawa with such a pathetic owner in place.

Meanwhile, an actual trade has happened...

To Pittsburgh
c Derick Brassard

To Ottawa
d Ian Cole
1st Round Pick, 2018
g Filip Gustavsson (2nd Round Pick, 2016)

It's very likely that Cole will be flipped for a middle round pick or prospect if possible, so it's a pure "futures" kind of deal.

Gustavsson looks like a solid goaltending prospect, which I know was a priority for Dorion... as was getting another 1st round pick. It also sets the table for one of White or Brown to step into a major role with the team next season.

1 more reason to cheer against pittsburgh

But seriously, that is a damn good team. Does this put them over the top of that division?

Always felt Brassard was a good chip to move because of the cap hit and he is actually decent. The return for him is ok. Cole will be flipped, so you can't really judge the deal just yet.

Gustvasson will be an interesting prospect. He is a few years away, but has good reports on him.

Will likely be more deals in the next few days, so a full trade deadline assessment can be made then.

fair points, I like how it was written above ...

but I don't know why teams haven't gone after Zack Smith - IMO he's such a solid addition to a team looking for a solid player without giving up too much

He's not a rental, could be impacting teams decsison.

3.25 isn't huge, but it's enough.

Yeah depends on what Cole brings back, and where that pittsburgh pick turns up.

Likely be a late one.

good recovery of assets from the zib debacle. but:

zib + 2018 2nd (34-38) >> cole, 2018 1st (20-31) and the prospect + 7th

They got a 7th back in the Zib trade!

Cmon man, you're better than this.

I feel a little better knowing Rangers traded that 2nd away though, for a guy currently in the AHL, and them rebuilding.

I may be a little spiteful.

PIT-OTT deal involving Brassard is ultra-complicated, so much so that Brassard will likely first be traded to a team other than PIT. Then flipped to PIT. Hearing that third team is likely VGK. Potential for layers of salary retention.
