Right so how can anyone judge? Everyone said they wanted picks, they are getting them, McD and NAsh will bring 2 or 3 more most likely inside the 3rd round.
- MiloslavHorava

Do we know how deep it gets after rd one? I know it’s probably hard to judge that

No it's not, and that's what has me worried for next season. Statistically this craptastic season could be chalked up to injuries even though we all know that AV has lost the team. What happens if AV isn't canned?
- Fenrir

If A.V. isn't canned, especially with the plan to be to become younger under a re-tool, this franchise will be set back another 5 years in its development. Look no further than his mishandling and worse done this season with Miller and Vesey, whose game development to the next steps, were prevented by A.V. to a great extent, with his constant shifting of both from line to line, and being with different line mates in most games. It's even to a greater extent in the case for Miller, who has proven he performs best when left playing at the wing only, as opposed to how A.V. thinks he can play anywhere.

Yeah but this team needs top end talent that looks to shoot and score goals tired of seeing guys wide open in slot trying to pass it like that little bug Desharnais tonight coaching staff needs to go but a roster loaded with good 2nd and 3td line pass 1st players needs to be changed as well
- dman78

That's correct in part. But all season long, you saw them allow 35+ S.O.G. per game more than practically every team in the league. You also saw as of at least one week ago, in that Hank had faced the 2nd most S.O.G. for the entire season of any goalie. And that doesn't include the shots that were blocked, or missed the nets, which makes them face more shot attempts with pressure constantly in their zone, than nearly every other team's goalies. So how can they possibly record enough shots to create enough scoring chances?
A great deal of that is due to this coaching staff having them play right from the opening face off, a passive, "SAFE = DEATH" type style of play, in not coming out to dictate the game flow.

Did some digging and found this about Yegor Rykov:

6' 2" in. tall approx. 210 lbs. Left handed defenseman 20 years old
Currently playing 3rd pair defense for 1st place team in KHL
Contract with KHL runs through end of next season April 2019
Current KHL teammates include our goalie prospect Shestyorkin, and former NHLers
Pavel Datsyuk and Ilya Kovalchuk.

Gained some fame last year when playing for Russia U20 WJC team when he was the defensive leading scorer and clearly outplayed Sergachev ( currently with Tampa) for the tournament.
NJ Devils drafted him in 5th round

I was hoping for a first round pick, especially if there were really 10 teams interested, but this is not a horrible return. Clearly we won't know if this is a good trade for at least 2 more years.

I only care about what he brought to this team. Loved him here and my fear is that he will stay in Jersey(of all teams) and torment us like nearly every ex-Ranger.
- Fenrir

Not trolling. Just curious and wanted to throw it out there.

What kind of contract will Grabner demand after the last two seasons he has had? And is that something a rebuilding Rangers team should be spending money on?

Who knows with this trade. You can’t judge it for a while. What you know is they are making the right decision. Like the other guy said, you got a second rounder and a prospect for a player that could go for free in 20 games. Doesn’t seem like a bad trade.

I warned you all earlier during the game that the delay in them announcing any trades that were supposedly coming down, starting with Grabner heading then to Toronto, was due to them exploring all options to increase their return value.
Gorton is an idiot to be taken by the Devils in this means, even if he has a written & signed disclosure that Grabner will be re-signing with the Rangers as a free agent this summer.
And you guys want them to trade McDonagh??? HAHAHA!
I can't wait until we see who will fleece Gorton next, and for what little in return. Sather was Sather. But the one thing he rarely did was get fleeced in making trades, but rather fleece the opposition's GM when possible instead.

Vatrano gets a low 3rd. We get a late 2nd and a guy that will never play in the NHL for a 30 goal scorer. Seems legit
- nyrangers9479

That's why I mentioned as late as Wednesday, that it was better to re-sign Grabner, than trade him at all, only to risk that he may re-sign with the team he would be dealt to, of which I never in the world though it would be a Eastern Conf. team, yet alone a Metro Div. competitor, yet alone a local rival.
I also warned many here that a 1st Rounder in exchange would be hard to come by, as with Nash's case in exchange as well.

Told you guys should have kept everyone and went for a playoff push
- TPC

I guess you and I, Matt, were thee only two who felt like going for a postseason push, with i also getting in depth on those earlier mathematical scenarios to play at to reach the likely 96 points needed, for not only the Rangers, but for all of the other Eastern teams competing for a Wild Card or slightly better.

I mean Grabner is a 3 month rental...idk what people expected to get for him. Yea he has 24 goals but 8 are empty netters
- TPC

But Grabner's 8 empty netters are a result of him being one of the best to put on the ice to protect a closing minutes 1 or even 2 goal lead.

The Devils were a late arriving entry to the Grabner bidding. Some 10 teams showed interest and they were one of the last to reach out but made a late push and got him.

- tomburton99

And you were laughing in some way after I posted during the game, the reason for the official announcements delay in any supposedly already made trades that were actually still on hold, (Grabner to Toronto at that time), due to the Rangers waiting for possible better offers. I also said it was best they hold off until at least late on Friday morning before calling them completed.

NHL club exec on Grabner to Devs:
"Very good value for NYR, 2nd rd pick for 3rd liner & possible 4-5 NHL D in Rykov, who is poor man's Dmitri Orlov (B+ prospect). Catch is he's playing in KHL, they tend to lock up players. If he comes over it's a bonus, that's the trick for NYR

- tomburton99

If Rykov has the potential to be a 4th d'man, then why were the Devils so willing to also part with him for Grabner?

Grabner will probably demand around $3M minimum per for 2 years, or $2.75M per for 3 years. The Rangers in rebuilding still need an experienced vet like Grabner, who utilizes his speed in many combined ways, but specializing in penalty killing and his defensive game, with 5 on 5 scoring success. The trade is hated by Rangers fans mainly due to him becoming a Devil, if not just another Metro Div. & Eastern Div. foe.
In not knowing if the kid, Rykov, will indeed want to play here instead of the KHL, the only plus currently with this deal is that Grabner had weeks earlier, expressed his willingness to discuss a new deal to remain with the Rangers, at anytime up until his free agency begins, in liking to play for them. So maybe he will re-sign here in the summer, although playing in Newark still allows him to enjoy the likes of New York.
