I said earlier today I don't think you get a 1st fro Grabner, hes a 20 game rental.
The Rangers lost ABSOLUTELY NOTHING in this deal. People don't seem to get that. He is a UFA next year, he can sign anywhere including the Rangers. Having him on the roster for the next ~20 games does one thing... improve their chances of winning a few games and subsequently negatively affect their draft p

- MiloslavHorava[positions in each round.

So for cutting his season with the Rangers short for 20 games the Rangers get a FREE 2nd round pick and a prospect that NOBODY knows anything about or how he will eventually pan out.

If they traded Grabner for a 1st and they drafter a bust and resigned Grabner next year, they would be in a worse spot. They turned a guy they were going to lose into the following:
A Prospect who the jury will be out on for the next 3-4 years
A Draft pic who the jury will be out on for the next 5-6 years
An equal Chance to resign Grabner

Put things in perspective people! 20 GAMES!

Agreed. I think peeps are overreacting (not surprised lol)

NHL club exec on Grabner to Devs:
"Very good value for NYR, 2nd rd pick for 3rd liner & possible 4-5 NHL D in Rykov, who is poor man's Dmitri Orlov (B+ prospect). Catch is he's playing in KHL, they tend to lock up players. If he comes over it's a bonus, that's the trick for NYR

Win 1 playoff round and it's 50+ or jump up 3 teams which is possible

My problem with it is to make a deal with the Devils, it better be substantially better than other things that are out there.

My biggest problem with it is the Russian kid isn’t expected to come over soon. Obviously he’s the key to the deal.

The only others possible thing I could come up with was this was going to be the highest possible 2nd round pick they could get especially if NJ Falls out of the playoffs

Rangers knew early they weren’t getting a 1st for Grabner. A 2nd and a prospect was next best thing. Rangers are happy about the move

- tomburton99

So if none of the teams were offering a 1st, they got a 2nd and a prospect. To me, that's best available. Unless anyone knows what they turned down. So lets all settle down

Exactly. I'd love to see a trade between Gorton and Chiarelli.

Nice blog, Saver.
Seriously, if they don't resign Grabner and he torments us from across the river for 3 years, that's a loss. I get what we've all been saying about trading UFA's for picks, but the Devils trade stings. Have to think they might have done a wee bit better.

Just weird sending him to your primary rival if you want him back. I just think it’s a weird trade. Not saying I wouldn’t trade with a rival but it better be a no doubt type of deal
- Pete V

OR, you just fleeced your rival for one of their picks and prospects for a guy that is coming back next season.... that stings if it works out that way... NO?

You have high hopes for Gorton operating like that. I like the enthusiasm, just don't believe it's gonna happen.

Fair deal for Grabs and if I’m not mistaken, Rykov is a teammate of Shestyorkin, so maybe he’ll help with the Russia to US transition.

Sometimes in a trade there is not a winner or loser. It could be even. I think people are annoyed we didn’t outright fleece them. Overall we didn’t get fleeced either

Are we trading him for what he did everywhere else? Or his 52 goals in a season and a half with us
- nyrangers9479

I only care about what he brought to this team. Loved him here and my fear is that he will stay in Jersey(of all teams) and torment us like nearly every ex-Ranger.

And if Grabner signs with another random team (Not NYR or NJD) you are pissed?
Remember when the Rangers got nothing for Yandle and everyone went berserk?
They got 2 guys here, 2 chances to find a roster player for trading away a player that was under contract for 20 more games... I'm happy with that, considering they didnt get any offers for a 1st rounder.

He’s a question mark for sure but the deal is for the Pick. The prospect in this case is a throw in...organization depth move

So for the past two weeks all we heard was he wants to resign with the Rangers but 20 games in a Devil's uniform is going to undo all that? Come on Man!!!

The problem is as fans we set our own standards as to what we think a player is worth. We are biased making those standerds. It don’t work that way. Bottom line is they got an extra pick and semi decent prospect for a guy they signed off the scrap heap basically and can sign again if they so choose

I don’t disagree with that. But if either he helps them win playoff rounds or resigns there I’m going to be pissed. Because honestly the success rate of second round picks in the NHL isn’t that high and they are the Devils. I have no interest in helping that club and in doing so trading an effective player within division. These are the kind of deals that can make you look real bad.
