Did I miss the speculation that they were being asked to waive their NTC’s and being shopped?

Benning from day 1 seems to be an Edler fan and lol they’ve been letting the Sedins influence the team’s decisions soo they’re NTC’s are kinda irrelevant anyway

This is what continues to worry me.
Oh well, 3 more years of re-tooling on the fly while staying competitive.

If Matthews is a bust I will take a team of busts. He's no Juolevi that's for sure.

Thanks Carol, but no need to call those of us against this contract “haters”. Gudbranson is regularly maligned by both the “stats” community and the “eye” test community for his poor play. He doesn’t scare anyone and the only time he is clearing the net is when he is fishing the puck out of it...

Thanks for the great blog!

- 1970vintage

Only stat nerds that are basic hate him. Those that look at comprehensive and complicated stats like quality of competition and high danger scoring chance prevention know that he defends the net at an elite level, he's just no good at offence or preventing low danger shots against. It's not really his fault that our goaltending is basic.
Corsi is the new plus minus... doesn't really tell anything, I think nucker posted some interesting things along these lines.

On another note.... Gudbranson is a big strong, hard D who stand up firm, combined with Sutters balls, how can you not love this signing? Unless you suffer from D envy of course?

I hope so too because a 2.8 mil happy face in the press box is nuts
- VANTEL

Almost as nuts as continuously playing a guy who bleeds scoring chances against despite getting spoon fed easy minutes.

The stats I posted show that EG is a decent #5 dman. People on Twitter/HF that only look at corsi are exaggerating when they say he’s terrible and can be replaced by Biega(LOL)

He can hold his own defensively, but he’s not a guy you want against top lines. Struggled to move the puck so he needs to be paired with someone who’s good at beating the forecheck. Pretty decent on the PK though.

That’s why I could live with 3M max, wouldn’t love it but wouldn’t say it’s bad at all. I guess you can make the argument that his leadership/toughness/etc is worth something, but how much more is that worth is the question.

Hopefully he improves a bit and becomes a decent #4 dman.

I agree with Green, I'd love to dump Hutton for whatever return we can get. Stop grinning, you suck at hockey

if you push aside his analytical stats, or even his regular stats, its the fact that his projection in the eyes of fans is in no where near where he actually produces. He doesn't play other teams top lines. He does a decent job, and I stress decent, at shot suppression, but given his playing style, you would hope for better. Gudbranson is a bottom pairing D-man, there is no real argument to say he is anything more at this point (not to say he could prove us all wrong and become a steady 2nd pairing shut down d man). Chalk it up to small sample size in Vancouver, blame new systems in Green, blame the Canadian market media vs FLA, he just isn't the defender he was projected to be.

I think even Benning would agree that he was expecting a better player. Hopefully he can actually stay healthy and play more games like he did against Boston. I’m all for giving the Edler-EG pairing an extended try, only concern is how they hold up against speedy lines/teams. Hopefully TG doesn’t have them out there with the Sedins lol

Could be a systems thing as well, Sbisa looks much better in Vegas so far under Gallant than he did here.

I think what Anaheim has in Josh Manson, is the EXACT type of player we all hoped Gudbranson would be, in all facets of a defensive + tough defensemen. I honestly will give Guddy the benefit of the doubt, and say that I think he has more to offer than what he has shown.

Green clearly cares about preperation and effort. Hence why some plugs are in his good books and Hutton isn't. Perhaps Hutton goofs around in practice. Would this really surprise anyone? I am still holding out hope that Hutton and Vanek are traded for picks.

Vancouver Fans: Hutton is adorable, he smiles big and likes to joke around a ton, why is the coach sitting him?. Lack stutters, hes adorable, lets sign a petition to keep him in Vancouver. Cody Hodgson scored goals for us a world junior once, why did we trade him for a guy who looks like he eats crayons?

pretty much. I always disliked Hutton and Lack (more than any player other than Messier). I guess I get it. Most hockey players are full of cliches and are terrible interviews. But this is a businness and I don't care about a players personality.

Edit: What I really care about is Granlund and intangibles

Its hard not to associate NHL success with Maturity, but if you look at Horvat and Boeser, and then you look at Virtanen and Hutton, you see 2 very different groups of people/players. I am not saying maturity translates into NHL success always, but its hard not to ignore.
