Silver lining is that it’s 3 years and not 4 or 5 + No NTC - Nucker101
3 issues:
1) the player - don't like him - would have traded him;
2) timeline of rebuild - need picks/prospects - would have traded him; and
3) contract - decent contract (short term and no clauses) - should be an easy contract to trade for value going forward.
given their desire to keep him, best of a bad situation. |

I could not agree more with the above.
The term and contract aren't really big issues at all. I more so have an issue with the fact that we have had the worst defense for the better part of 4 years now. Worst defensively, and worst offensively (production wise). Signing Gudbranson gives no clear message from management that we are trying to get better, but like I said before, we will try and be better with what we have. Gudbranson isn't the worst d-men in the league, while I am kind of biased to his style, I just think it would have been a WAY better option to trade him, giving the current status of the team, Jim Bennings ability to draft, and the direction to which I think the team needs to go. |

but why not trade him for a couple mid-picks, sign schenn in the offseason and trade him next year for a mid-pick.
small gains, but those extra picks add up. and benning is proving to be half-decent at drafting, so why not play to his strength?
must feel like 2016 all over again. |

Thanks Carol, but no need to call those of us against this contract “haters”. Gudbranson is regularly maligned by both the “stats” community and the “eye” test community for his poor play. He doesn’t scare anyone and the only time he is clearing the net is when he is fishing the puck out of it...
Thanks for the great blog! |

Weren't we top 10(6th at the best) defensively in the league before Tanev and Gudbranson as well as Bo and Sutter went down?
I think a top 4 showing X-Tanev and Edler-Guddy will be a good top 4 next year. Then Edler is gone. If we get Dahlin that top 4 looks even better, I would even argue that OJ could slot with Tanev in that pairing and give Edler and Gudbranson tougher minutes. They have done well with them so far. |

I am on team tank, want the picks and wanted Guddy gone. Just not going to let it bother me. A team that is rebuilding but not selling off assets is mind bottling. |

You think he has the same value league wide as Kempny/Holden?
What does that say about what JB paid to get him and his new contract?
Either JB really overvalues him or they didn’t really want to trade him.
You can’t have it both ways. |

i doubt it was.
maybe a 3rd and a 5th. but take it. sign someone else to take his roster spot and flip that guy into picks.
just keep churning it for another year.
otherwise, 3 years from now you guys are going to wonder why you have a handful of good players, but no organizational depth. |

I don’t believe VAN was/is at all proactive on a Tanev trade but since he’s not likely to play for another three or four weeks, well, that doesn’t encourage potential suitors. Of course, it could be revisited in June if a club is so inclined.
