He traded for Messier and that was the final piece for the Rangers. He went nuts in the Free spending days of pre Cap Free agency. Guys like Fleury, Kamensky, Holik, Skrudland, Keane to name a few.

I think his owner Dolan wanted the big names so he just kept throwing money around like a drunken sailor. It never really improved them though. They got to the conference final vs the Flyers in 97 and were swept. Then the Wings swept the Flyers to win the Cup. Good times. ☺

Wings had 4 picks in the 2nd round in 2011 IIRC... They took Tomas Jurco, Ryan Sproul and Xavier Ouellet and some kid named Ruutuu. Trochek was drafted in the 3rd round by Florida. I think they took Huberdeau with their first round pick.
