I honestly think JB thinks he is serviceable, rather than good. I also think this is more about saving face than anything. Losing Gudbranson to either free agency, or for a super low return, makes his past trade (McCann + 2nd + 4th) look bad. I would prefer he cut his losses, said "I gave it a shot, you win some you lose some" and do whats best for the organization, which imo, is not only not re-signing him, but properly build this team with what you specialize in as a GM, and that is drafting.

Players like Hunwick, Polak, all those types. Those teams are now looking for upgrades on them. Players like De Haan who already makes 3.33 AAV is going to get a raise. Players like Demer's who makes much more then that traded because they can't play defence and teams don't want them.
