Yep, he was always a long shot but has good two way game and plays C.
Benning called him a Datsyuk.. but I was thinking more like Chubarov.

I don’t think it was JB who made the comparison, he probably repeated it though.

Hirsch says Patrick Maroon is not a fit here in Vancouver, "teams are going quick and small up front and big and heavy on the back end." #Canucks.

Here's a really solid summary of why +/- is useless, I know it's come up a few times so I thought I'd share. I also find it ironic that people that hate on stats often rely on the most useless stat (+/-) to make inferences

Chuby was an elite 4th line C, someone to build a contending team around

Reading Bob Murray’s comments on the high prices, how can a successful team not have what “Patrick Eaves” supplies somewhere in their system?
- 1970vintage

They’ve tried to give the young guys a chance but none of them have stepped up outside of Kase.

Murray won’t trade a good prospect or decent pick for a guy like Vanek. At most he’d offer a 3rd, but most likely a 4th I’m guessing.

I’m not talking Murray specifically, but his comments got me thinking about how NHL GM’s haven’t evolved as quickly as the players. I know that in years past the Pens have been buyers at the deadline, but look at the success of some of their young players slotting in. Instead of renting a player from a team at the deadline, they should be sending their rentals to a more desperate (and stupid) GM and continuing the cycle.

We are also playing Col tomorrow. So we were most likely scouting them for the upcoming game.

I agree to an extent. Some playoff teams just don’t have much depth in their AHL system for them to have guys good enough to fill a key role on the big club. Plus some teams want to just add depth in case of injuries to one of their good players.

How about right at the start, "shot based metrics are better than goals"

I find it ironic that the articles suggest that because a player does something that is more difficult then something that is easier it shouldn't be counted.

A good general manager will be a seller at the trade deadline every year, no matter where the team sits in the standings. This is because, a good general manager is shrewd on the draft floor and is constantly promoting players from within the organization to take the place of those on expiring contracts. It takes time and patience to get there, but it’s the only way I can see a team being successful long term.

super lame header. I think he was just trying to get the readers attention, because he breaks into more detail about how the end goal and most important goal, is getting goals a little further into the article.

How about as the guy says about Mark Stuart. -3 5v5. Not what you would hope.

-19 on the PK. Show me a D that has positive numbers playing the PK over a season.

Ended up as a plus 5 at the end of the season. So he was able to help his team out, keeping and extending leads 8 times in the season.

True. But money still talks.

Sharks GM Wilson traded Setoguchi in the Burns trade just right after he signed him to a new contract.

Didn’t seem to hurt his ability to sign UFA’s like Paul Martin, Mikkel Boedker, etc.

Boedker didn’t even get a NTC

Yes I am, but at least back in my day we were always considering stats as part of a winning formula.
+/- was aand is always going too be subjective. We used to keep stats on many things that the stats nerds refuse to try address, such as the amount of time a team has control of play after a big hit( it was 3 shifts), how a poor shift change can change momentum of the game(usually 2 shifts), how a backhand clearing pass was usually intercepted(over 68%).
We also had stats on when a goalie made a save, when a defenseman never cleared front of net and when a cherry picker cost a goal.
Our stats were not nearly as refined as they are now, but at least we could put quantifiable values to what the nerds are doing these days.
By the way, these stats were developed by our team as 14 and 15 year-olds over 40 years ago.
