As long as Lyon and Tokarski remain healthy, I don’t believe they can. Rumor has it though that Tokarski was last seen getting on a boat with Riley Cote, Derian Hatcher and Paul Homgren, so...... |

FWIW: Goalies on likely non playoff teams on expiring contracts and what it will likely cost to acquire them
Chad Johnson BUF: 6th round pick. I'd be fine with that deal
Cam Ward CAR: 4th round pick. He's a very popular player there and I don't think they'd move him for less than a 4th. Since he's not worth more than a 6th at this point, I'd pass.
Jonathan Bernier COL: 4th and a B level prospect. It would probably be a fair deal, but I'd rather just move a 6th for Johnson.
Petr Mrazek DET: All kidding aside, I still think you could get him for a 3rd. Detroit can't afford to re-sign him and I doubt anyone would give them any more. He's playing for a new contract and isn't that old. I'd be fine with swapping a 3rd for him, even more than moving a 6th for Johnson. If he's on, he is a very good goalie.
Antti Niemi MTL: 6th round pick. Yeah, he's played well since coming to Montreal, but I'll pass. I just think he's got nothing left.
Ondrej Pavelec NYR: Because its a rival, the Rags likely ask for at least a 5th and perhaps a 4th. I'll pass, I don't even like him for a 6th.
SO, my top 3 targets would be:
1. Mrazek
2. Johnson
3. Bernier
Re Neuvirth: I'd try to move him if possible after the season, and, if there are no takers, bite the relatively small bullet and buy him out. Come back with Elliott and a vet on a 1 year deal next season. If Hart is ready to take the top spot for 19-20, I'd just extend Elliott for 2 years to be the backup/mentor which is a role he should excel in. - BiggE
24 hours ago I would have said to wait and see if the cost of Mrazek drops to a 4th and then I'd probably pull the trigger. Naturally, Neuvirth can't even make it to the deadline so that changes things. For a 3rd, I'd probably do it but I'm still not sold. If I knew we could bring him back next year in combo with Elliott (while moving Neuvirth like you suggest), I'd do it. But seeing as how he's making 4 mil this year, I doubt that will be happening.
I know we're in a position of need now, but if it's a move for a pure rental, I think I'm only willing to move a 4th or worse with maybe a throw-in, nothing special prospect. None of these guys are good or consistent enough. It's not like we're talking about a Lundqvisit-level talent as a rental (if he was one) being available.
If Bernier was available for a 4th that's my target. Then probably Chad Johnson. Mrazek moves up from 3rd to 1st/2nd if price drops to a 4th. |

Chad Johnson BUF: 6th round pick. I'd be fine with that deal

Do we really want a Chad on this team? No, I don't think we do. |

You keep stating this. There is certain criteria that has to be met to recall a player from juniors on an emergency basis. |

Just gonna say the same thing about bernier. That's who I go for if the price is right. Ufa and a solid vet. I'm worried that teams are gonna jack up the price now though. |

Yeah. The consideration is that it's insane. You want to drop a kid into the nhl in a playoff race?? Lyon has been in the a for 2 years, and he's taken a bit to adjust. We want to promote a guy from junior?? |

I don't like the 3rd for mrazek. Maybe part of a larger deal??
Mrazek is a rfa. How do you manage that going forward? Don't offer him a contract? Trade him? We can't offer him a 3 year deal and block someone even if he was ok with backing up. |

If rules allow is it really going to hurt to have him up for 1-2 games while they figure things out? And if he looks good in practice would it really hurt to give him 1 game? The kid knows pressure situations. He was WJ goalies 2 years ina row. I think he can handle 1 NHL game or backup duty. |

Handling the RFA issue is no big deal. Just make him a one year qualifying offer. They will have ample cap room next season, so no worries there. IF he signs it, fine, trade, waive or buyout Neuvirth. And, if he signs elsewhere, again, fine, take the draft picks and move on.

IIRC, as long as they have 2 healthy goalie on NHL contracts, can be 1 way or 2 way, they cannot use him. Lyon and Tokarski fit the criteria so it's a non issue for now.

I hope so but I don't think so. I thought he got hurt on the Nash goal with the way he reacted. |

It may work out fine as you say. Not sure what mrazeks value is right now. I'm happy with Elliott's play really. If you can sign mrazek for 1 or 2 years, maybe he's the 1 a to play 40. |
