If Tanev is Canucks #1 defenseman then they need enormous help there. Tanev wouldn’t even crack top 2 in Buffalo and Buffalo has one of the worst defenses in the league. Tanev is also the next Joffrey Lupul in terms of injuries. He’s one hit away from being a regular on the LTIR list.

The only thing that makes the deal unreal to the point of shock is that he added this year’s Canucks pick in the trade. Which will probably end up being a top 5 pick.

Lehkonen has just remembered bow to produce offensively and Gallagher is having a solid year.

Plekanec has been just fine in his reduced role.... his salary is insanely too high but he's been just fine.

He's just getting old.

- Scabeh

He's very responsible defensively and i'm sure he'd produce more with Brown and JVR, what do you want for him?

the cap is pro rated to the amount of games left.
- bobbyisno1

So how does that work, since there's only a third of the season left his cap hit is 1 million?

Not going to happen this year but it's a tantalizing idea.
- mjones242

I am tired of watching Hyman miss chances. Sure he digs out some pucks, but he doesn't seem to be making much room for Matthews and Willie. Kapenan's speed will make tons of room for them. Could be magic...

Thank You Kessel!

I think there will be less that a quarter of a season so under 1.5

I want him to play NOT in Toronto.

Jokes aside, If we can somehow get a 2nd rounder for him I'd be more than pleased.

I'd honestly love him on our 4th line.

Hyman is playing well.
going to 40 points this season - without PP minutes and an important part of PK.

(btw anyone has a link to the prediction thread on Leafs / NHL?)

- MaximusAurelius

I am pretty sure as a men's league all-star I could get 20-30 points playing with Willie and Matthews.

A 40 point season on a first line with a generational talent is good?

They have the potential to have the best first line in hockey, but not with Hyman. Need someone who can bury more chances..

Does a team's entire salary get prorated the same way, and the max cap amount?

I don't think this is right... a player's season long cap hit doesn't decrease when compared to the season long 75 million upper cap limit, that wouldn't make any sense

A player's salary is prorated but not the cap hit

Well they already used that cap space durig the games played, any cap space not used can still be used in full.

No it doesn't but say the Leafs trade bozak, they used the cap space up until he's traded and then the team that trades for him gets the leftover and the Leafs get that cap relief.

Well yeah.

But anyways, back to my original point. Any team trading FOR plekanec is beholden to his 3 million cap hit (after the habs retain 50%) no questions asked, if they want to roster him.

But they probably have that cap space at this point since most team saved on it with injuries or other things....

I'm telling ya, teams have options for UFA's.

No, the Habs already used the cap space when he plays for them, that would be like a double tax.
You only pay the caps space on the amount of games heplays for the team.

So cap space as a running total throughout the season?

This is a good Leaf team but have little chance of a deep run. Make a splash... move Komorov and JVR for a big return and parlay that return + into a true top 2 D this summer.

Just the used cap sapce, If they have unused it stays the same and they can use it all at the deadline.

Just heard from a reliable source. Closed door meeting with some players excluded.

A Leaf player is about to get blackballed.

Gist of the meeting....
If one of them is on a 2 on 1 with Komarov - shoot.
If Komarov is available for a break away - look for someone else - includes Leo coming out of the PBox.
If Leo is alone in front of the net and their goalie is tied up behind the net - try a wrap around.
If Leo is wide open and you broke your stick - try to kick it in - take a chance on the video replay.
If they are in the longest Shoot Out ever, of course Leo goes last..in fact just concede the point when his turn comes up and get off the ice.

Also if a team trades for a player they only pay the remaining salary as NHL players get paid every 4 weeks, so I don't see why Montreal would retain.

Why? I feel that all this group needs is more experience? Obviously, it would be nice to find another top 4 d-men, but if our forward group is hitting on all cylinders, I see no reason we can't go far...
