I believe he was saying there is a big difference between one :
A) being great themself
B) being able to accurately identify greatness in another.

Gionta had proven leadership, but before the Sabres teams (because the Sabres collection of players are unable to be lead).
Because he says he thinks somebody else would be a great leader doesn’t have the necessary credibility. It would be different if Gionta had previous examples of he, himself actually selecting great leaders...then he would have the credibility to be taken as an authority on the subject.
