Outstanding deal for Backlund. He is getting a raise on his current salary of 1.775 mil.

Stajan, Versteeg, Bartkowski, and the Raymond buyout come off the books, freeing up 6.537 million.

With the cap space we already have, plus the salary cap likely getting a bump up, that is a lot of room to get the Flames RFA group signed with plenty to spare.
(Jankowski, Hathaway, Kulak & Rittich)

Excellent cap management.

The next important ones are Ferland and Chuky. Tkachuk especially is starting to look like he'll be expensive. The Edm numbers won't help the Flames on that negotiation.

Agreed. Plus the goalie situation will need to be resolved as Smith is a FA.

I would expect Stone to be traded by that time, allowing Ras to take over his role at minimal cap hit. Valimaki may be ready by then too, maybe making Brodie expendable.

Brouwer would have a year left on his deal, may be the right time to buyout.

I'd say he's already expendable. At least, he's going to be the guy that I'm most willing to part with that would net the largest return.

Yeah I feel the same. I've been on board for trading Brodie all season, since he's the piece that most makes sense for us to move and will also net a pretty good return. We have the defensive depth to be fine losing him and he makes way more sense to trade than any other defensemam of ours.

All this talk about trading Brodie is pretty CrayCray if you ask me.

Who would take his spot?

We have yet to see if Hamonic can drive the 2nd pair.

Can't remember how the saying goes......

______ wins championships.......anyone?

I would love to recoup some of the pics we lost for Hamonic, and yes Brodie has been a bit of a Tire Fire in our own end, but if we are going to go all drastic why not try Stone with Brodie which seemed to work pretty decent earlier in the year, then Hamonic with Andersson to ease the kid in.

Just a thought.

Happy Year of the female dog you female doges.

I was listening to the fan 960 crew all day today and one of their main topics was Tkachuk's eligibility to sign a contract extension after July 1st and getting him locked up for 8 years in that first week. I know it's just speculation but they were throwing around numbers like 6 mil to 6.75 mill a year. Get. It. Done. Tre. : thumbsup:

Yeah, I'm not sure how I feel about that internal 6.75 Gio cap. It would have been nice to get JH for another year or 2 and i'd like them to lock up Chucky for max term too.

I'm not saying the Flames SHOULD trade Brodie, just that if they were going to trade a piece, I'd prefer it to be a guy that is having a down year but has a great cap hit and will likely be more sought after and gain more than other options.

Yeah pretty much this. Brodie is what would probably net us the best return and is the guy who makes the most sense to trade. Doesn't necessarily mean we should. Stone I can see netting a decent return too, but I think Brodie will draw more interest.

Agreed. No way in hell is Tre goingmto trade Brodie.

A reduction in his minutes would help, but whos going to fill the gap?

Stoner is already a staple on the PK, with him and Brodie. I dont know if Rassmus is the answer but we could at least try y'know..

Its almost like nobody has been paying attention for the last year and a half.

Brodie is a left defenseman.
Anderson is a right defenseman.
Defense can only play the side that their handedness dictates.
If the Flames trade Brodie they need a left defenseman so either they get one in the trade, use Bartkowski or they bring up Wotherspoon.
If it was a simple as taking a right handed shot and converting him to a left defenseman then they could have converted Brodie to a right defenseman and not sold the farm for Hamonic. After all right defense are rare as hens teeth and left defense are a dime a dozen.
The only thing that can be expected if they trade Brodie is that Kulak and Bartkowski share the minutes and Anderson rides the pine.
Still want to trade Brodie?

I agree Brodie will net a good return and unless things change should be the guy to go.

To tell you the truth I Hamonic seemd like he could handle the break out and if so would like to get a mean mother like Regher in the top 4 who teams hate playing against.

I know the game is changing and your big mean stay at home guys are going the way of the Dodo, but our lacks a little bit of muscle to push around the bigger teams in the West.

There not doing anything with our D core if they were thinking seriously about trading Brody then you would have seen fat Rass up a lot more or someone else.why in the world you trade one of your top defence (yes unfortunately he is!) for say a winger, then replace him with a young D man in with what two games of experience. That's a early season thing to do not during a playoff push!! Unless you package Brody and gillies and say another something for ekmand Larson type D but that prob won't happen.

Maybe I’m reading to far into this but to me the timing of signing Backlund is very interesting.

I feel like BT wanted to get a gauge on what kind of money he would have left over if he was going to make a move for a player with term.

Insert Hoffman, it’s been no secret that the flames have been heavily scouting the sens and I think we all believe that player is Hoffman.

Now first thing this morning after the Backlund signing it’s rumoured the blues are in heavey trade discussion to acquire Hoffman.

Could be an interesting day! Probably me overthinking it but who knows.

Why does everyone keep keying in on LW's as our need?

Hoffman would be competing with Thachuk and Gaudreau. Or removing size by pushing Ferland down.Or shifting a solid 2way player in Frolik down.

I don't think that improves anything.
