It's called the Chiarelli special. It all started with the Seguin trade. Ever since then for some reason almost every deal he made was buying for $2 and selling for $1. We are just now on the mend. Good luck guys and be thankful for McDavid because once you turf Chairelli and some of his patent bloated contracts the turnaround will be made much easier by his presence.

He did fleece the Leafs in the Rask for Raycroft deal.
You could also argue he won the Kessel trade since that turned into Seguin and Dougie Hamilton-although Pittsburgh fans would argue.
The Maroon deal was good.

There are several reasons why the Oilers aren't as good as they could be, tanking (or picking 1st overall) isn't one of them. It takes more than just getting the best player in the world because hockey is such a team game

They havnt proved anything, it's all just media hype. I'd wait until there's on ice improvement before I get to excited about the Canucks future prospects. Good blog. Something more tangible to discuss than griping about your usual.

We have often been said to be following Chicago or Pittsburgh rebuilds but Edmonton has never had the success at drafying/developing prospects like Chicago.

So many wasted picks. Some for hiring Chiarelli and McLellan. Some to bad trades Reinhart and Reider. Some we let walk like Pitlick.

But both the drafting itself has been poorly thought out and executed imo. Why have we been drafting so many left shooting defensman for so many years. Maybe it's because I'm a long term planner but the Oilers strategy has been horrific imo. They need to be drafting with far more thought towards how they develop thier prospects. Have a plan for each prospect. Mentorship, Coaching, what league/competition, age, ice time, and position depth.

I think Oilers need a really good draft this year to set up what will hopefully be a cup contending team in 5 years.

One thing mentioned but maybe was overlooked a bit is just how many first rounders the Oilers have playing on the team right now. McDavid, Leon, Nuge, Nurse, Klefbom and Puliarvi. Heck even Yama has NHL games under his belt. That does scew the whole picture a bit.
