Thompson and Phaneuf were both horrible contracts. They're both off the books now- that's a positive.
Gaborik's contract also sucks, but he's actually making less than his cap hit- which to a budget team like Ottawa is massive. Makes his buyout cheaper, combined with the fact that he's oft injured- he could go on LTIR. Higher likelihood of getting out of this contract than Phaneuf.
You have a controllable asset in Nick Shore. He probably has value, and wouldn't be surprising if he was traded. He's RFA at the end of this season.
The retention of Phaneuf's salary sucks, but at the end of the day it isn't a huge hit.
Dorion just signed an extension- like him or not, he isn't going anywhere.
I really don't think Dorion is trading Hoff, Stone, Duchene, or Karlsson. But consider guys like Brassard, Smith, and maybe even Pageau gone. Get what you can for Oduya (even if its a 7th).
I'm interested to see if this trade makes Ceci better. I know people rag on him here, but was this overshadowed by Dion?
I don't understand the people on here trying to pretend like Dion was this unbelievable and reliable D-man. He was good last year in the playoffs, but he's been awful all year. Exhibit A) The first goal last night.
He'll fit in well as a 4/5 in LA. I think Thompson will too.
Don't mind the trade at all. |

Teams with loser owners can't compete in the league anymore. Here's Melnyk's comment on the trade:
“How long can you underwrite a team?” Melnyk said on Parliament Hill. “Like, literally underwrite. Write a cheque. I have it. But I’m not going to blow a lifetime of working hard to support a hockey team. It’s not going to happen"
After Karlsson walks, the next move should be relocation. This franchise is a joke |

Agreed formenton has a long way to go, but Lazar, is not a good player.
I feel a second round pick for Lazar (a 4th liner) is a win either way.
I think it was the guy acquired in the other trade with calgary, for Chiasson, who hit Mac. |

Best option outside retirement for Gaborik is undoubtedly LTIR. That said, I hope the plan is to play him as much as they can. He seems like an injury or two away from his last. |

Um, source? That sounds like what he said at the outdoor game, not after this particular trade. Still, it was very infuriating to every fan who heard it. |

The trade is what it is. I think Dion brings a little more useful value to the Kings in the short term. Getting rid of Thompson who is useless is nice. Essentially, Sens save a little money long term and have a tiny bit more flexibility cap wise.
I was shocked that Eugene approved to retain part of Dion's salary. Let's hope this is a positive to perhaps shell out a little extra dough when needed for certain contract extensions.
I don't really get the Methot/expansion draft stuff people are crying about. That's the nature of the business. He would not have saved our season. Would have lost another player that people would be complaining about. |

Easy money. Anderson and Condon arent going carry this team next year to be out of the lottery.
LETS GO! - DDM-Coga
Lots could still change prior to next year. Anderson could bounce back with his "on" year after this "bad" one. Defense could be improved w/o the likes of Oduya and Phaneuf. And Boucher may even be gone.
You don't trade what will likely be a KNOWN top 5 pick for an UNKNOWN. That would potentially mean you lose out both years. PD should DEFINITELY be fired after that.
But hey, you could still wind up with a top 5 pick next year, and I'd be okay with that. |

Real talk, the Sens are in a real tough spot with this draft pick. Give it up this year and try to soften the blow in 2019 loading up to win.
But to load up you would have to spend money in order to do so and that could hurt the the team trying to save up for Karlsson salary
You need Karlsson to lessen the 2019 pick, but if hes not wanting to sign an ext July 1st. Do you trade him to do a rebuild.
Honestly this teams direction for the next 5 years can be dictated this offseason. Its a fascinating story line to watch |

My guess is they are better off keeping their first round pick this year then anyway. The player they draft is 1 year closer to playing on the team then worrying about who they draft in 2019.
Unless of course they get first overall 2019. |

It's actually not as tough as you've stated. Already gave my reasoning.
Next year is indeed up in the air, depending on a bunch of factors. Karlsson is at the center of that, and we won't know his likelihood to sign until July. Hope PD refuses to listen to anything but fantastic offers. Otherwise focus should be on signing him, or even a sign-and-trade. |
