Elliott will most likely miss more time this season thru injury than Neuvirth and finish with a lower SV%.
- Feanor

That's an easy way to frame it now knowing Elliott will miss a month and a half. He's been the difference maker in net all season. He got ran into the ground because they couldn't count on Neuvirth.

If you're suggesting that Neuvy is the better goalie to ice given the option between the two I flat out disagree.

You guys really want to pair Neuvy with Lehtonen? The only thing they'll be battling over is who can get hurt first.
- hereticpride

Lehtonen has been fairly healthy the last 5 years. Had a conky 2-3 years ago but no concerns recently.

They need a defenseman more than they need a goalie imo

not better, just had the coaches trust. No data or eye test shows any big difference in their play. Was it better for Sanheim to get more minutes in LHV? sure but that is it
- wcorvette

I disagree. By the eye test Manning was definitly better and there is also data to suggest Manning was better at the time.

What is a coaches trust based on? Who he likes better personally or from on ice results and action?

You're comfortable with giving Lyon starts in a playoff race?

Ideally I'd like to see Hextall add one forward and one defender who both are capable of helping the PK but they absolutely need an upgrade over Lyon. They can get by with Gudas and Manning for the time being.

He was seeing better results than Sanheim. Big difference. There was no better proof to that than the repeated mistakes that led to goals against right after Sanheim was sent down
- YuenglingJagr

Manning was simply the better player at the time which is why he was playing and Sanheim was not. The context of the conversation was about what the situation was when both players were on the roster, and not about play after Sanheim was sent down.

Coma man Saint Ronnie isn't trading for a goalie.

Manning sure hasn’t played better in the last six weeks....he’s been dreadful. It’s only a matter of time before Sanheim returns....hopefully for good.

100 % ....Hak is trying to win....had Nuevy played decent, then maybe Elliot wouldn’t of had to play as much...Elliot did just have a couple of long breaks as well....but I guess when you haven’t played that much in 9 years....it may be a problem.

I was channeling my inner clown

Seriously though I think Hextall rides this one out. He isn't giving away a 2nd or more for a backup rental goalie.

I said this earlier. That I would not be surprised if Hexy tries to ride this out with Neuvirth and Tokarski/Lyon

I think he'll try and make a minor deal for a back up if the contract is right. All of this talk about trading a 2nd round pick or prospects though is pretty insane.

Just my thoughts:

1. Injuries happen. I have followed Brian Elliott's career for a long time now. While he thought he was coming to Philadelphia to be a tandem, he has always wanted to be a No. 1. He wanted to play all those games. I wish he hadn't gotten hurt, though I recognize his limitations, because I can't fault a player like him, drafted in the 9th round, from answering the bell every single time he is asked.

2. I don't blame Hasktol for riding Elliott, for one huge reason: Neuvirth is so damn unreliable, I wouldn't trust him either. It's that simple. Neuvirth is completely unreliable, to me as an observer. I don't really agree with Hakstol's goalie usage all the time, but this year, with Neuvirth, I get it. Totally unreliable goalie.

3. I am hesitant to give up too much for a stopgap goalie. But they are clearly good enough to make the playoffs. Still can't decide what I would do.

Which one? The one at the Ellisburg Shopping Center?

Sorry for the late response. Yup, at Ellisburg in Cherry Hill.

Neuvirth for sure. Elliott has always been pretty durable

...up until he was forced to play so much

- YuenglingJagr

It's not just the total number of games; it's the large number of games in such a condensed period of time.

I guess I don't really believe in the "riding the hot goalie" approach until you get to March.

It's like using your best starting pitcher on 3 days rest in June. Everything might be fine, but why take the chance?

1-4, yes.
5, agree, but not happening
6. infuriating how many points they have given away since 2005 - they just never ever get better at this, no matter the players. it's a crucial part of the game now and those points add up and they matter. FIX IT.

- hammarby31

I thought about the best shootout shooters and it seems like most of them have mastered one move then use counters off of that one move. Most of the Flyers shooters don't seem to have a game plan. They just kinda go in and see what happens.

This site loves bad analogies. 5 days rest between starts is the standard in baseball. Using a starter on 3 days rest is rare and only done in the extreme such as having to win a game to get in or in a must win game in a playoff series because there is no tomorrow if you don't win. There is no such standard in hockey and it's not even close to being a comparable situation. A bubble playoff team who chooses not to ride a hot goaltender at points early in the season may find that it has no reason to ride a hot goalie in March. Every game and every point counts in the race to the playoffs. A team like the Flyers can't coast until March.
