Slow. Very (frank)ing slow. - Wildschwein
slower then Phaneuf? hard to believe considering he's still scoring...
should be good on the 3rd line and maybe some time on the PP...must still have some hands...
either way, melnyk saved money which i'm sure was the main reason for the deal

Thompson and Shore, just saving for the Sens? seems like such a lateral, pointless move otherwise. - david22
saving a couple millions is not lateral for melnyk...and i'll take Shore over Thompson...younger, cheaper and still has potential...can't say that about Thompson... |

1) Yes. Hard to believe but true.
2) Had a good start to the season but has fallen off a cliff since. Oft injured but good for probably 30-ish points per season.
3) Certainly. |

Dreger is reporting it is Phaneuf and Thompson for Gaborik and Shore. Senators retain 25% of Phaneuf's salary. - Mpepe1084
I never found Phaneuf to be nearly as much of a problem as some believed, but I guess they had to make a move while there was a tangible offer on the table. Presumably Gaborik is a long-term buyout candidate... Shore and Thompson are a bit of a wash, though Shore is 8 years younger and still has some potential upside after not really fitting in well with the Kings' system. I don't expect them to hesitate to move the likes of Smith, Oduya, and maybe Brassard.
The good news is that this is the first step towards making room for some major extensions. The bad news is that the blue line is even more dependent on Karlsson and Ceci than they were before.

They save another 5 mil if they buy out gaborik.....or close to that. Frees up money for EK and clears room on the blue line for better and younger guys |

Phaneufs salary made him look worse than he was. He was still a servicable Dman. Hopefully he helps LA, they're in a taispin right now and I have quick on my fantasy team
Shore I imagine will be gone at the end of the year. |

If Ottawa buys out gaborik they save almost 8 mil over the next 3 years. They also got out of that awful Thompson contract and got a good bottom six player in return. They also clear room for better younger players on D
This was a great deal for ottawa |

How so with the buy out? It halves the cap hit, but over a longer period of time, no? Or is it half the cap hit, and they pay half the salary

I don't understand 100% the workings of the buy out but several people on Twitter said Ottawa saves about 4 mil or so if they buy him out, plus about another 4 in salary.....pmus bonuses they don't have to pay |

I agree about Phaneuf. For a more physical defenseman, he has been able to stay relatively healthy while still putting up a decent amount of points. He just was not worth what he was making. |

They're an older squad who had little use for Gaborik (oft injured and lately scratched). Phaneuf at least will be useful to them. |

I doubt melnyk buys him out. So 5ish in savings. Cool
And shore will be overpaid to wipe out the Thompson savings |

Why would he not buy him out......he saves money
As for shore, there is no guarantee they even qualify him.....and if they do it will be for less than thomoson.
I mean I know we didn't get quality assets like cowen and greening back, but still a solid trade |

Not usually the melnyk way to buyout contracts...and they don't need more cap space to sign Karlsson...they have lots of space, with that Dion trade + the Mac LTIR... |

Shore will be gone next season. Likely someone from Belleville takes his spot, likely more than the 600,000 Shore makes now, but it wont be a big contract.
I'm still not sure how buying out saves Melnyk money, i thought buyouts didn't work that way, it just makes it take longer. |

All that happened is 5m savings for melnyk.
That money goes into his pocket, not back into the team.
Sens reality check. Starting to act like the budget team they are |

yes, i understand that but the Sens (hard to believe I know) are actually pretty damn close to the cap ceiling right now, even after the trade...giving raises to Karlsson, Stone & Duchene will require not only salary but cap space as well...
At least the burrows, oduya contracts will be done by then...
Trading another contract will be necessary IF they want to keep Karlsson, Stone, Duchene, Hoffman, Brassard...
I could see Smith go...maybe some more magic on Ryan! lol |
