Bogosian and a 3rd for Dion and their 2018 1st. We're eating up money and term in dion's contract, they need to pony up for that.
- sskkoo1

But they are also getting the worse defender who you can expect to miss 30+ games a year.

yes, you are getting the longer term and higher dollar, but again, at least Phaneuf is a legit top 4 d-man.

Hell, I'd offer:

Bogo, Bailey, and a 2nd

for Dion and their first (non-lottery protected)

You are also getting a player that could end up on LTIR and creates an extra $2M for them to fit Karlsson in their cap (if there is a self-imposed cap there).

He'd easily be one of the best overpaid players we have on this team.

Overpaid, absolutely, be he would fit great on the 2nd pair.
- ImThatGuy

I'll take Hoffman as well, gives them space to sign Karlsson

I agree Dion is the superior Dman, but we're currently on the edge of being saddled with bad contracts and that could cripple this team over the next few years. Getting out from under them and injecting this team with youth seems GMJB's plan. If Dion goes to crap soon--and he might, he's hitting that age window--we're screwed. I think GMJB would be wise to look at this trade as a salary/term dump on behalf of the Senators.

Bogo, Bailey, Nylander and a 2nd

for

Dion, Hoffman, and their first (non-lottery protected)

clears up a ton of space to keep Karlsson.

His production has been good, but his possession stats aren't great. Top 4 on this team, yes.

It's that 3rd year that's problematic. The Sabres should be getting faster by then and having Phaneuf doesn't help there. They should be in the business of shedding the contracts of 29, 26 and 47, not making them worse IMO. Like the other poster said though, sure, as long as it's not a straight swap.

Do you really want to saddle yourself with a 35 year-old Phaneuf in year 3?

He's also wise enough to counter and try to get more.

He knows they are in trouble trying to extend Karlsson.

I think this could be an offer that works for both sides.

I'm saying at age 35.

Not in terms of their salary/term.

Oh, ok. Gorges probably won't make it to his age 35 season IMO. This year, or definitely next will be his last

I know you are not the only one to say it, but they dont have their 2018 1st, it is gone in the Duchene trade. Man Colorado may have struck big on that one....

It's conditional this year. I believe it's top-10 protected this year, and not protected at all next year

Edit: yeah it is

Anyone else hear of Homie's rumor of Larsson to the Pens? I would love if this happened, either him or Girgs needs to go already, this experiment with these two has run its course.

I think it would be great for Larsson, and maybe even Girgs. They seem like the type that would really excel with the Pens in a 3rd/4th line role.

It would also be a win for us: More roster room for younger guys getting stints toward the end of the season.

Oh ok, missed that. So we want their 1st rounder in that proposed trade if it is top 10 this year or next year if this years is not top 10? I don't think they even consider that. They are rebuilding now, no way they can trade that pick (and then not have a 1st for the next 2 years). Sorry

Yeah, so they have no first or third next year, as is.

I would do:

Bogo
Nylander
2019 3rd

for

Phaneuf
Hoffman

We get the best players, they get salary relief, a good prospect and a pick to replace the one they spent

That works too.

I didn't realize the pick(s) were gone.

The Duchene deal had a major impact on me, obviously.

Hoffman catches the rumored asking price that the Sabres want for Kane. 1st, roster player and a prospect. Hoffman is better than Kane and has term, so He gets it.

Yeah for sure. It's hard to gauge what a salary dump is worth to a cheap owner like Melnyk. It's been reported that the GM and staff have to clean their own offices to save money

I'd up it to a 2nd and throw in Bailey with Nylander and Bogo. Hoffman is really good
