Advanced stat's aren't going to give you the big picture. Look at the Canucks with Gudbranson out and Virtanen politely asking Lewis if he wanted to fight.

Big problem, It won't get better when Gudbranson's gone and Jake's plying his trade in Utica or another team, will it?

- VanHockeyGuy

When someone runs one of your players like Lewis did...you don't politely ask to fight. You get right down to punching just as many times as you can. Who gives a poop if his hand is taped and he could get a match penalty ? Don't hit our only star player in a vulnerable position and you won't need to worry about an asskicking! I'm glad the fans and the media are taking this collection of pacifist babies to task , it's about time the culture of this team was gutted and rebuilt with something that looks like pride in the jersey and solidarity in your teammates.

Lot's of fans don't get it, you do. The hipsters sipping their double latte's in Yaletown and people who despise any form of aggression should look for a new sport FFS.

I thought he made a good point about Dorsett. Most in here (not me) hated him and now that he is done he was a warrior that is sorely missed. A bunch of whiners in here.
- Marwood

I don't think Dorsett's "haters" had a problem with him being a warrior and most appreciated his willingness to be punched in the face.

His contract, deployment (both not his fault) and his drop in play coinciding with those things is what people had issue with. Dorsett scrapping with Lewis would not of prevented the next cheap shot on Brock.
Guddy maybe but even that I doubt.
But it would of made the eye for eye ers feel a bit better.

We'll touch on this again. Next time the outcome may not be so forgiving.

I have a problem that Green was okay with that hit on BB, it's not the way he should be setting the table.

Virtanen and Edler's "words" mean nothing, they're big but not tough, there should have been push back.

- VanHockeyGuy

You and I disagreed on the finer points of fisticuffs in the game of hockey. I don’t think that anything either of us has to say will change the others mind. But “advanced” (I so hate this term) stats are exactly what shows the “big picture”. They measure the likelihood of an outcome with a degree of certainty based on a reliable set of data points.

As far as when (if) Gudbranson is gone? That guy is not the answer. He isn’t “tough to play against”. There are 31 NHL coaches who if given last change, would not hold their #1 line on the bench if @guddy44 was on for the face off.

For what it’s worth, @alwaysninetyfour over at Canucks Army, a decidedly advanced stat kind of blog, totally agrees with you...

“The Canucks don’t have a physical presence. Travis Green has no doubt talked to Jake Virtanen about this and potentially a few other players. Part of this rebuild will involve a bit more skilled muscle because one guy can’t do it all. When Boeser was hit into the boards last game there was no pushback aside from his rocket to the back of the net. This team should be feared when they have the puck just as much as when they do not. It’s quite evident they can be pushed around.”

I also agree, the team is soft through and through, including the so called tough guys.

I'd say 30. The Canucks would probably keep their top line off the ice and save them for when they have a more offensively gifted Dman out there.

You don't get it. I'm talking about standing up for your team mate. It doesn't HAVE to be fisticuffs FFS. PUSH BACK! as in body check one of their guys or give him a facewash, or stick in the ribs behind the play. If your okay with the way Edler and JV handled it, i feel sorry for you.

I didnt have any problem with it for a couple reasons

1) This wont be even close to the worst hit Brock takes in his career. Green knows this and is sending him the message that he has to be tough. Brock will be a target and he'll have to be aware

2) He knows his team doesnt have the guys capable of doing anything except embarrass themselves. It does no good for Green to call out the organization, management and his players for a style they are not suited for. Virtanen's 2 NHL fights are against Filip Forsberg and 5'10" Bobby Farnham; I can almost guarantee that it would've been a seatbelt fight that would have sent the same message as doing nothing

No need, I’m all good. I think Boeser handled it just fine, maybe a little stare down or something towards the penalty box would have been appropriate.

I’m trying to have a conversation, you seem to think that you are right and anyone who has a different opinion doesn’t get it. Whatever floats your boat I guess.

Funny this is being talked about today when Yost (who is awful) has a piece on TSN called "The Death of Heavy Hockey". The gist of the piece is how much hitting is down league-wide and that Chirelli ruined the Oilers by trying to make them the Kings/Bruins even after the league had figured out how to play against them

Fortnite really is insanely fun, especially with your buds and some headsets. Servers have been down for about 10 hours now I think.

I really don't see that as the central problem facing the Canucks. The game is moving away from having plugs like dorsett and Eg in the lineup. Get with the times!
