Some more little bits regarding Sanheim's demotion.

Hakstol said it’s a matter of Sanheim “gaining a little more maturity, and he’s going to be an outstanding player in this league.”

In some of the last games he played with the Flyers, “he probably lost a little bit of the confidence, and that can happen to a young defenseman in this league,” Hakstol said. “I think for him to go and play some games in the American League and get himself back to the top of his game is really important for him.”

Mark Alt, 26, was recalled as the extra defenseman. The righthanded-shooting Alt was solid in eight games with the Flyers earlier this season: “He was able to jump in the lineup and play with confidence,” Hakstol said.

The Hextall one's are just weird at times :

Some of what Travis Sanheim is going through is good for Travis,” Hextall said last week. “Again, I don’t want a young player sitting as long as he’s sat or missing many more games, but there’s a lot you learn up there (in the press box). Part of it is a life lesson of you’ve got to earn things. You’re not going to be handed things just because you’re a first-round pick or a highly paid guy or whatever. You have to earn things. That’s a huge lesson in life. I said it before but we don’t come out of college and become a CEO. You’ve got to pay your dues and earn what you’re gonna get.”

If you look at the whole year on Travis I think he’s played well for us,” general manager Ron Hextall said. “He’s had his moments, but he’s a young player and that’s gonna happen. Obviously I don’t like him sitting and the coaches don’t like him sitting and I’m sure he doesn’t like sitting either. Something will break here at some point.”

-- Whats with Hex and the kids having to earn and fight for every single damn thing. Not sure how to feel about that. Seems a bit overdone.

But wouldn't you want Sanheim to fly past Manning as quickly as possible? Maybe if Hakstol would have never benched Sanheim he would be better than Manning 15 games later or however long it as been. Even if he wouldnt be better right now wouldn't he a a useful piece if they made the playoffs and by then he was better than Manning?

It was rhetorical but trust me in many circumstances it needs to be answered.

That was kind of my point. Guys like Prov, and Hagg have done a great job at coming in and having immediate success to a varying degree.

The one's who have struggled a bit, club is a bit too hard on in my eyes. Hopefully it pays off I suppose. People will point to Konec and Ghost here for right/wrong.

I think there is some wiggle room for stating that at times the Flyers are too tight with the measuring stick for some players earning more responsibility and ice time. For example I think it's reasonable to ask if Konecny would have responded quicker to get to the level he is playing at currently if he was given better linemates and ice time sooner. I however would counter that the Flyers approach does seem to be working and that over cooking is better than rushing.
How many AHL seasons did Hagg have?

Couts came into the league with a phenomenal hockey IQ and was fully equipped to take on a checking role from the get go. He wasn't kept In the NHL to develop. He earned a spot out of camp and continued to improve over 7 seasons.

I dont think Sanheim has earned anything yet. He played 35 games and didn't make a definitive case to stay In the line up. That being said, I don't think it will be long until he does. But you don't prioritize 1 players development over the team winning.

Sanheim is fully equipped right now to take on the role that he will be tasked to do in the NHL, problem is they didn't asked him to do it. Right now, he has NHL skating, hands and vision. And for some reason, they didn't ask him to use it. It's the thing where he gets most of his confidence from and asked him not to use it.

But all that is besides the main point. The fact is that players do develop in the NHL. On the very rare occasion does a player come in and automatically contribute. It usually takes a little bit of time.

Sanheim is not capable right now of playing in the complete role that the Flyers envision for him in the future.

So the Flyers asked Sanheim to play not using his skating, hands and vision? This is one of the more ridiculous posts I've read. Even if a defenseman labeled an offensive defenseman doesn't play on the PP or in heavy offensive zone starts with the teams best offensive players in the most cushy offensive situations available, a defenseman still has to play using those physical tools just simply playing the position.

Here is where many fans fall short of seeing the entire picture. The Flyers don't want Sanheim to be just an offensive defenseman. They want him to be everything that he is capable of being with the talent and skill set he has. That includes the defensive end of the ice. That is where they want him to focus on in getting better so that he can have a chance to develop into the heavy minute all situations defenseman that he is capable of developing into. They're not going to give him the reward before earning it. It's that simple. Right or wrong, like it or not that is their approach. When his all around game improves enough then he will gradually get more responsibility. It's the same thing with Lindblom. They want him to be more than the depth bottom 6 role playing forward that he already capable of being in the NHL.
