I don't think there is a recent measure (eye ball test or fancy stats) that shows Manning playing well right now.
- johndewar

I think it's the physicality he has in his game as well as the fact that he has way more experience than any other d-man the Flyers could play other than him. They are trying to win as much as possible so in that sense I understand playing him. Sanheim is talented but at this point is prone to make more mistakes than Manning would and that's why Manning is in the line-up over him.

That is because he isn't!
- YuenglingJagr

I don't know if it's an org thing or a coach thing, but Brandon Manning does seem to get the benefit of the doubt.

That said, his time with this organization is probably numbered, given the depth in LHV.

/waits for announcement of Manning extension

I thought Crosby was the Crosby of women's hockey har har har
- YuenglingJagr

Apparently Crosby approved the Canadian men's Olympic team roster even though it didn't include Kunitz. Quite a surprise

How about how the Flyers fundamentally flawed method of evaluating defenseman handled Provorov and Hagg? The Flyers are a surging team right now who has one of the best records in the NHL over the last month or so.
- MJL

There's a huge and obvious gap between the effectiveness of Provorov and Hagg as defensemen.

I just want to point out that just because the rest of the league is doing it, it doesn't mean it's the best way to go about it. NHL teams make mistakes on talent evaluation, all the time. That's why you see bad trades.
- VladDrag

I guess time will tell. So far it looks like they've hit with Provorov, Ghost and Hagg so seems like they know what they're doing in terms of developing d-men. Until I see otherwise, I'll give management the benefit of the doubt with how they are handling Sanheim.

I haven't been down on Manning much this year, because I think he has been adequate as a bottom pairing guy this year, but recently, it seems like he has been bad. And I don't think putting him on PP2 is a good idea, given that he's going poorly right now.
- johndewar

That's exactly what I mean. I think Manning is playing the #6 role adequately, but that doesn't mean he is playing without fault. I will say, he did not play very well last game.

It's crazy it took so long for TK to get put back on that unit.

I am not commenting on his 5 v 5 play but yes I don't think he needs to be on PP2 either. They only have Ghost on PP1 and with Provorov on PP2 Why can they not slot another forward into that spot to create a little more offence? Watching him dump it into the corner 3 times against Washington on the PP is not creating anything.

So shall we just pretend the coaching staff didn't try to get Ghost to play "conservatively" I don't think they have had one set way of developing each defenseman yet, so I am not sure what is proven.

I don't get the reason why everyone is so sour on Hagg. He's a rookie first of all and he's leading the NHL in hits right now. From what I've seen he does a good job of finishing checks, clears the front of the net decently and had pretty good positioning most of the time. Not to mention I rarely see him make mistakes that cost the team. Sure he doesn't have the offensive prowess of a Ghost or Provorov but he is a safe player and you need players like that to win. His advanced stats might look bad or whatever it is but when I watch the team play he is definitely a factor out there and the Flyers would be worse off without him in the lineup. He's also only going to get better.

one can also point out that the VGK were put in a position to get decent to good NHL talent, more so that any other expansion team. How many expansion teams can get a Fluery and a young goalie in Subban? Some teams were in a position to really lose good players. The Flyers were lucky this time to only lose PEB but that most likely won't be the case for Seattle. Of course that all said who expected the best record in the league? that is absurd

I don't know if it was that they were trying to get him to play conservatively or the fact that they wanted to get him to commit to playing a more two way game. Whatever it was it sure seems to be paying off with the way he is playing right now so as I said I think the way they are handling the young d-men is fine.

Quick Carter Hart update. Named WHL goalie of the week for the 5th time of the season with a sparkling 2-0 record 0.50 GAA .980 SV stopping 48 of 49 shots faces.

Keep it up my young friend.

- SimmerDown

pretty sure I read he's a shutout away from tying the league's shutout record as well.

Yet their biggest contributors have been guys that have been cast off by other teams. Marchessault not only walked in Tampa, but is believe to be the reason for VGK to take on Reilly Smith's contract. Smith himself has been very good. Tuch, Schmidt, Theodore, Haula, and Karlsson were all deemed worth losing over other players

Subban was a waiver add as well, not expansion pick

Is the Sanheim demotion going to be addressed in a separate blog?

He's scored less than Leier despite getting 30 minutes of PP time, and has inferior possession numbers.

And does anyone think Lehtera's helping the PK?

- Feanor

he has actually pressured the puck and set up some chances. First, Lier hasnt really played lately and when he was, he would pressure but then skate right past the puck. Its really the size that keeps Lethera in the line up, plus if you want any shot at trading him, he needs to plays. Maybe he gets a few points and who knows. LOL

My issue is when gost came into the nhl they let him excel at what he was good at first and taught him and brought along his 2 way game. With sanheim they are trying to hold hostage what he does best until he develops the defensive acumen. It doesn't make sense. Let the kid do what he's good at and develop his flaws. I feel we force him into situations where his flaws are magnified. That being said him being in the ahl playing top pairing all situations is what's best for him for now with how he's been handled.
