Gudas made an comment when Manning came back from injury, something like, it is different with Manning, I have to do more teaching on the ice with Travis. I would think that had some influence on Haks decision.
- wcorvette

because he's a rookie!

if communicating with the young players is some kind of foreign idea to Hak and the players then holy hell we have some real problems

My favorite part is how you would think that a team playing well and goalies performing well (even during some defensive breakdowns) would be a good situation for a player adapting to the league to come in and rub off some of that green.

Without getting into a debate on whether Manning is playing better than Sanheim or not, using playing time in an argument is completely bogus because it is a clear result of the coaches thinking he is better than he is. If Manning were a 6/7 like he should be, there would be no issue. He was getting PP2 time. He was playing top 4 minutes.

I think he was actually playing better (relative to himself) during the 10 game losing streak

The Flyers due to the makeup of the current team are having to use a number of players in bigger roles than they're suited for. That will hopefully change once the Flyers develop more player to the point where they're ready to take on more responsibility and phase the veterans out.

No, he wasn't.
- Feanor

Context. For a 19/20 year old rookie defenseman in the NHL he was absolutely exceptional. His level of play commanded heavy ice time in all areas of the game as a rookie overall.

yet somehow he is used as an example of the Flyers developing young defensemen

Oilers did a great job developing McDavid too

Konecny also got 118 PP minutes as a 19 year old rookie, so this notion that PP time only goes to young players who have proved themselves defensively is nonsense. When exactly did Konecny's "fundamental defensive game" get "where it needs to be"? Because he got PP2 time right away in 16-17.

This season Patrick has struggled more than Sanheim, but he's on PP2 almost every game.

- Feanor

There is a difference between forwards and defenseman. Nor is everything static.

Patrick has struggled offensively due to physical issues. As I explained previously, Patrick's play away from the puck is sound for an NHL rookie.

Fans want everything to be exactly the same, player to player, without any nuances due to position and type of player.

Fallacy argument. The Flyers have a number of young players that they are developing. Each one is going to take a different path but apparently that has to be explained. Provorov is a clear example that if the players play warrants it, they will " let them play" regardless of how young or inexperienced they are.

Sanheim is ready for the NHL in my opinion. He just isn't one of the top 6 defenseman on the team in my opinion and apparently also in the coaches opinion. It's better for him to play in the AHL than to not play in the NHL.

I am not familiar with anyone saying every player developed the same way. Sometimes the different path can be a skillset that is clearly NHL ready and given chances to succeed based on the players strengths (i.e. Sergachev)

Provorov has been from day one, one of the best defensemen on the roster. Who was going to play over him? Nothing about Provorov proves that the Flyers coach is committed to developing his players.

None of this is about Brandon Manning being more talented than Travis Sanheim. There isn't a world where he is (well, maybe a flat one) It is about the coach being more comfortable playing the "safer" Brandon Manning and favoring guys that play the way he does over guys that play the way Sanheim does. Call a spade a spade, don't pretend Manning is better.

I just watched Silence this weekend...certainly an interesting film. I have always been fascinated by all the horrible things people have done to each other throughout time in the name of "God(s)"
