Slavin took 7 years at $5.3

If it's that long term I can see Nurse coming in around the same mark.

- PepinoPamplemousse

Slavin is the better of the two (right now at least), but thats a pretty fair comparison.

Let me ask you (frank)ers this. Would you have been more happy with RNH for Larsson?
- RafiDRW

More happy yes. Actually happy? Not sure. At the time of the trade we knew Hall was an elite winger, we knew RNH was a top 6 centre and Draisaitl was on his way to being the same. Draisaitl has 51 points the season before the Larsson trade playing mostly with Hall.

If you trade Nuge for Larsson you have McDavid on a line with Maroon and Eberle. Hall playing with Draisaitl and someone... yeah I would have rather that.

Yes.

Though having McDavid and Draisaitl as rookie 1-2 centers would have been rough.

No. I repeat. Larsson is a second pair guy that is inept offensively. He’s leaking goals against this year. Most of his assists are secondary. He can’t move the puck forward. It’s either a dump out or pass to his partner. Hall was a massive overpay. RNH would still have been an overpay.
He has trouble dealing with speedy forwards.

It would have been “better” but still bad.

Here's a comparrison of Klefbom's numbers and games before he signed his 4.167, 7 year contract.

Klefbom had played 107 games from 2013 to the end of the 2015 season. Over that time he had 6 goals and 28 assists or .32 ppg

Darnell Nurse has played 161 games over his ELC and has 14 goals and 25 assists or .24 ppg.

I don't see Nurse getting 5 million per but rumor is the team wants to lock him up long term. If the could sign Nurse to a similar deal as Klef in the 4.2-4.3 range that would be great, otherwise bridge it for sure.

Of course Nurse's agent could simply point out the Russell has 4x4 which means Nurse deserves at least 6.5..........

The problem with using Klefbom as a gauge is his contract was signed about three years ago. The cap will have increased by about 7-9 million by the summer (about a 10% bump) and Nurse is currently having a better year than Klefbom's rookie year. Factor in that a comparable player in Mike Matheson just signed a contract worth 4.875 for 8 years and you've got to consider the likelihood that his cap hit might be higher than we anticipated going into the year.

I seem to recall him not having these sorts of troubles before he came here so I feel like some of it is systems- a Devils fan would know more. Sekera and Klefbom's play before Todd makes me believe the over reliance on wall plays and the rim-around are a Todd problem more than individual player problem.

The one thing I'll contest is that he "has trouble dealing with speedy forwards"- wholeheartedly disagree. He's great at closing them off and separating his man regardless of speed. His leaking goals against this year is more a byproduct of his playing with a struggling Klefbom early in the year and is just as much a system problem.

Slavin had a bit more stable track record, but with the cap going up, I don't think it's far off percentage wise if you're looking at a long-term deal.

You recall correctly. His play in Jersey was nothing short of solid.

Larsson was quite something on the Devils. His offense was non existent, but he was solid enough defensively that the opposition barely created any offense either.

It was like nothing at all happened when he was on the ice.

Thats what made me love him in the first place. After years of watching leaky Oiler D coverage, Larsson's play in Jersey was a sight to behold.

Its been killing me to see him struggle this year.

I think Larsson can be very effective in the right system. It's why Edmonton targetted him from Jersey and Fayne prior. The thing is New Jersey used to play that type of trap system where guys like Fayne and Larsson could excel.

I think Larsson can be effective as he was last season with a guy like Klefbom (if Klef is playing like he did last year and not this year) but Larsson will never be the type of player that can drive a pair himself.

Guys guys I just figured it out... Chiarelli is trying to amass top 5 draft picks, but only ones from 5 or 6 years ago.
