What it means is he's done rather well drafting in the later rounds. They've done well as a team not rushing kids to the NHL.

Holland tends to hand out bad contracts but what GM doesn't ?

I don't think they realize that they're losing.

Spitballing for the sake of killing time:

Klefbom or Nurse for Trouba
Sekera with .5mil retained for C Brown
Caggiula and a pick for Pageau
Slepyshev for another fringe guy(?)
Maroon for a Blais and a 3rd (cond. a 2nd depending on success in playoffs or resigning)

Sign Calvert, Mitchell and another fast bottom-6 guy in the offseason

Resign Puljujarvi before the season

Lucic- McDavid- Puljujarvi
Draisaitl- Nuge- Brown
Khaira- Pageau- Blais
Calvert- Mitchell- Kassian
Wingels and others

Nurse- Larsson
Russell- Trouba
Davidson/Benning/Auvitu

Ideally we could add a Ron Hainsey type guy in the offseason to bolster our left side until a guy like Jones, Lagesson or Samorukov come into their own but I'm comfortable with that blueline.

I’d prefer it be Klefbom if we HAD to move one.

That being said, if Trouba wants outa Winnipeg, why would he sign in Edmonton?

My understanding of his desire to leave had more to do with lack of opportunity behind Byfuglien (PP-wise). Maybe there's more to it.

As for Klef v Nurse, I think it comes down to Nurse's new contract and if we can shed some D cap hit (Sekera or Russell). If Nurse ends up at over 5.5, it might prove worth it to keep Klef over him for the 1.4mil in cap space.

Eww. We cannot give Nurse 5.5.
Id love Trouba here. Top Pair two way rhd.
Larsson as a number 3.

Could be.

Klefbom’s contract does increase his value to the club, but I’m willing to gamble on the possibility that Nurse will be the better player.
As to Nurse’s next contract, I really hope it doesn’t crack 5. However if he continues to play the way he has, I can see it happening. That is unless he signs a bridge deal.

As bad as the Hall for Larsson trade looks now, it's the only one of his awful moves that made even a lick of sense at the time. They were addressing a desperate need and avoiding the inevitable McDavid vs Hall dressing room split. Hall wanted the Oilers to be his team, and he wasn't going to step aside for McDavid, nor was he all that keen on mentoring him.

If that had been the only awful trade Chiarelli made, they'd probably be in a pretty good spot right now.

I doubt it gets up that high. Either they'll bridge him at like 4 or get him at around 4.6-4.9 long term.

As we've discussed before, the market number stands somewhere between 4.6 and 4.9. More than that is a bad deal (barring a crazy second half) and less is a great one.
