LATEST FROM TSN’S INSIDERS

TSN: Darren Dreger reports the Buffalo Sabres asking price for left wing Evander Kane could be rising. It was originally reported the Sabres sought “a first round draft pick, a prospect and a conditional draft pick”, but Sabres general manager Jason Botterill could also want an NHL player included in that package.

The question is: will he get it? The rental market isn't quite as robust as it used to be.

There's always a GM that will give more, Forsberg from the Preds is one example. Little different scenario but you get what i'm saying.

Can they afford Kane ? the Pens would like Kane as well but don't think they can afford him, plus Botterill likes Maatta and Sprong, not sure how serious the Sprong one is though.

If he gets that much he should be the GM of the year

But I highly doubt he gets that much

Leafs are 4pts from being out of a playoff spot. If they take any key injuries and start to falter, they can own the UFA sellers market. I hope GMGB sells sooner than later.

I don't see the pens as a good trade partner unless they come off Maatta

To a certain point.
Last couple of years the trades made about a month before the deadline seemed to have the highest value...at least that is what this old brain seems to remember anyway.

Other consideration is Buffaluck - Kane should be playing with braces on both knees and both shoulder, and wearing bubble wrap underneath the uni.

Why sooner? maximize the value of what we have to offer, what do the Leafs have? Bozak? JVR ? what else after ? rushing is what got us in the mess to begin with and also what got Murray fired.

Canes like Reinhart and have some interest in Kane but not as much as other teams. For some reason when I mention the Canes on here for a trade folks on this blog mention Hanifin first, that's a non starting point. I don't think they are going to move him, no reason to.

JVR, Bozak, Komarov, Polak...

This isn't rushing the rebuild like what Murray tried to do, this is rushing a few weeks a head to make sure we get a good return for our UFAs. If kane can bring back a 1st, a prospect, and a 3rd, why wait? If the Leafs start to lose and JVR goes up for grabs, he becomes the most coveted UFA for sale and Kane's value goes down.

Right now the Leafs are willing to let all of their UFAs walk for nothing given that they believe they'll be having a playoff run. If those playoff expectations evaporate in the next few weeks, bet your bottom dollar they'll be selling these guys and it becomes more of a buyers market than a sellers.

then they say Faulk

and if there is a lockout in 19-20, we would only have him for 1 year and then he is UFA

leafs have roughly 33 mil in cap space next year

they could have the dream team (for 1 year) if they get a few guys on 1 year contracts this off season

Then if it happens that way, it happens nothing we can do about it, he will bring in some assets just will take some time.

Noah's going to get paid.

Depending on how Aho is out, I don't think Francis is willing to spend much to improve this season.

Shopping in Free Agency or leading up to the draft seems much more likely at this point.

Reinhart gets brought up more because he fits better with the age group of players they already have, and he's more of a low risk/high reward move.

Right, but we're all aware of Buffaluck. We are in a position of strength now, we might not be in a month. If GMJB is receiving fair to above fair offers now, he should seriously consider pulling the trigger. What he's asking for is greedy on an absurd level, but if he gets it, he's a frigging genius. But, I feel that presently he might be playing with fire.

sabres won 2 games in a row, once this season

zero games by 3 goals

and the games they won by 2 goals, they scored empty netters

that's pretty pathetic
