Moving him with 1 year left is a lot more valuable than moving him out of desperation because they cant sign him to the $ he wants. - Buggy166
No it isn't. Any team that trades for him is going to want him to sign an extension. Whether he has 1 year left or not is irrelevant. And yes they can sign him to the money he wants because A) his numbers are garbage so it's not like he's coming from a position of strength and B) they have 55 million dollars in cap space when he becomes a UFA and they have to reach the cap floor. The rest of their D is old and/or trash so investing in him isn't the worst thing they could do.
Not to mention, their team isnt going anywhere with him in their lineup. A 1st round pick + a top 4 Dman on an ok contract + a young top 6 forward or top prospect provides a lot more value than a not-quite-superstar having a bad year (again for the nth year?) while being surrounded by mediocre AHL players in an NHL league.
So what? Maybe next year they improve and he isn't -40 and doesn't look completely useless and can trade him for something more valuable than spare parts. Or maybe, they improve and don't have to trade him because he's part of the solution because he's really good and he's in his prime.
Same idea with Kessel in Toronto. Good player, poope team. Only his contract was too big and too long. Cant trade the whole poopty team but can trade your best player for some returns.
Kessel was a lot more one-dimensional than OEL but the Leafs (frank)ed up huge with Kessel. They moved him when his value was the lowest and they got peanuts for him. A very late 1st round pick, a guy they got rid of and a future 3rd liner for a 30+ goal scorer on a Cup winner. Leafs got (frank)ed twice with Kessel, once on the way in and once on the way out. Why would Arizona, much like Toronto with Kessel, force themselves to get less when they can wait and get more in the future if OEL has a better year next year? He's not getting in the way of tanking and he could easily be a part of their future team considering he's not likely going to bring anything as valuable in return.
I dont know if it happens, simpy because of $ going forward. Toronto wouldnt deal the assets required unless OEL was coming back on a 8 year deal or something long like it.
Same goes for every other team out there which goes back to the first point that Arizona absolutely does not have to trade him this year unless they're blown away by an amazing offer which probably won't come. There is little to no reason for them to trade him now. And if he does get moved, it's probably at the draft for a bunch of top picks and prospects that the Leafs won't want to give up (Nylander+). |

That already happened. Twice. When Clarkson got traded and when Phaneuf got traded. Still can't believe Ottawa was that (frank)ing stupid... |

I think the Leafs are going to get a 4th line center like Derek MacKenzie. |

Connor Brown seems to be the obvious roster player that would move as an asset. I love Brown but if he plus a prospect (Kap/Bracco) and a First gets you OEL you do it every day of the week. Soshnikov/Leivo can replace Browns production. |

Just for laughs. How would a Shattenkirk or Yandle type player fit your razzle dazzle? |

Serverson out of New Jersey is about the right age and seems to be on the outs there, much more interested in something like than than a massively declining Martin or a terrible badbranson - burn
Severson is definitely someone the Leafs should target if he is available at all. |

We're asking a lot of Leivo to replace JVR's and Brown's production.
He'll have to score 45-50 goals a year. |

It's long been known certain people here would rather just insert Leivo in instead of JVR and the Leafs wouldn't miss a beat. |

Hypothetical here:
To Edm: Mike Hoffman, Cody Ceci
To NYI: Ryan Nugent Hopkins, Logan Brown, 2020 2nd round pick - AlfieisKing[EDM]
To OTT: John Tavares, Oscar Klebom
*Dorion allowed to talk to Johnny T resigns Tavraes 8 [email protected]
*Resign Karlsson 8 [email protected]
Duchene - Tavares - Ryan
Dzingel - Brassard - Stone
Smith - Pageau - White
Klefbom - Karlsson
Chabot - Phanuef
Edm wins this deal.
Ott wins this deal.
NYI only win the deal if Tavares isn't going to resign. Doubt he goes anywhere though, still fun to talk about
