I believe that Tavares would be able to veto a trade to an 8 team list. Winnipeg could be on it.

Charlie. I think we all agree there are only 22 roster spots and we have a boatload of talent. The dilemma is that we also have a large core of players we want to keep and some who need to be signed to some term and that are going to be bumping up against the salary cap after next season. Therefore we can't just go and shop around for another marquee player for any term longer than 1 year ( end of 2018-19 season) because we wont have the cap room. So while Chevy can afford to part with some prospects for a rental in a cup run , guys like Hoffman, Stone, Tavares, etc...the really good trade to make from a franchise aspect is to package up three or four prospects and a guy like Copp or Lowry or Trouba and get an top notch RFA or a guy like Dahlen.....both who can play next season and yet are cheap on cap.
- jetsnation

Absolutley. Quality players on the cheap on ELC's. If somehow Dhalen or a quality RFA could be landed, heleluja! Then you have control for a number of years while hopefully being at a reasonable cost, fitting under cap because we know that Morrisey,Trouba, Wheels, Laine are going to gobble up cap. This is one reason why I say Poolman pencils in next year as a regular because of the ELC and he has shown that he can play NHL level without being a liability. We have the prospect capital to spend, I guess we will have to wait and see what Chevy does.

But, I agree that the RFA or even a top pick might be Chevys preference and "the best for the team" as he likes to get long term control from a draft. I guess we have to wait.

You are the only person on the planet who'd take Dano over Lowry, do you think you are smarter than every single other person in hockey or out? Remember how many times I told you how wrong about postma you were? I do!!!! And I was right every time!!!!!!! And I'm right again!!!!!!! It's too bad you'll never admit it, but I still know!!!!!! No worries though Rexy, I am
Always here to help point you in the right direction

I mean, you were wrong, and I can guarantee it would be at least a 50/50 split in the Dano/Lowry argument. Lowry is tall, but he’s also older, and he’s never produced at the rate Dano has. Any team doing its research will know that Lowry isn’t on Dano’s level, and he’s already hit his ceiling.

Is it true someone said Dano is better than Lowry? And Petan is NHL ready?
Bonus thread of trading for Tavares is hilarious.....we attract who as free-agents? Almost no one and now we are going to convince Tavares to sign here for $12-$14 million per????
This is obviously not a serious person, or maybe someone’s kid got their phone.

- jjonah

Those are both obvious.
On the Tavares part, we do manage to hold onto almost everyone who signs here and doesn’t suck. Mathieu Perreault is one of the biggest FA steals of this era.

Don’t mistake hanging on to talent with signing players that can go anywhere they want. Good grief that’s weak

Show me stats from the last few years where Dano has ever produced on level with Lowry, please. And to be clear I'm talking actual stats like total goals, assists and points not your so called "underlying" made up stats that you think you can project if he played first line minutes on a line with Gretzky and Kurri. And 50/50????? Not in this universe or if you pulled anyone currently working for an NHL. Maybe a few of your anylitics buddies that think shots out weigh results

You would think Wpg would be on the list unless we wants a crack at playoffs. Even if Tavares did come as a rental, I can't see Tavares here long term unless you are sending some big contract or potential contract back that way. Tavares wants big money. I am not saying he is not worth it but we need to pay Morrisey, Trouba next year and Laine the year after (and Wheeler the year after will get a raise) So, is there enough to pay Tavares 10 mill or what ever he wants next year? Which big contract are we sending back along with aboat laod of prospects, draft picks, your left (you know what, lol).

And don't say Buf because I am not too sure too many teams wants to sign up for 22 million on an aging free style defenceman.

Winnipeg would normally be on that list, however, a shot at the cup may change that. I will remain shocked if he does not ante up with the Islanders.

I think we need to find out whether Trouba wants to be here long term. If not, I am in favour of dealing him with prospects to acquire John Tavares.

If the Jets get an agreement from Tavares that he would sign here long term, I would trade the following to get him: Jacob Trouba, Mason Appelton, Eric Comrie, 2018 first and third round picks, plus a 2019 second round pick. Or I would be willing to just trade Trouba plus Petan for OEL, if that deal appears on the table.

- TheUltimateJet

If this Tavares scenario would happen, Trouba is the big potential contract going back but now there is a big hole on D. You would need as Jetsnation states either a very high draft like Dahlen or a top RFA to replace which either way is going to be costly.

OEL, hmmm, yes, that might work. He has one more year at 5.5. But do you think Petan has to be included as well for a deal with AZ?

Okay, so you basically just said I can only use 3 basic stats that paint about 5% of the story to compare 2 players. Brilliant. You’re on the fast track to NHL management.

I’ve also never said Dano was an all-world top line player. But there is a ton of evidence to suggest that he would excel in a 2nd or 3rd line role (preferably as the net front guy on the PP), mostly because he’s done it before at this level with a lot of success.[/img]

Trading for Tavares is the same situation as trading for Karlsson next year: you’re making the deal knowing there’s a solid chance you’re getting a rental. The only difference there being that Karlsson is a tier higher.

Whatever we give up for Tavares (hopefully Myers and Little somehow), we have the depth to replace anything outside the core. Petan, Niku, Roslovic, and possibly Comrie are all NHL players next year (Niku will be held back by Kulikov, unfortunately). Appleton and Lemieux have an outside chance.

The real question in a trade for JT is: Do you make the deal if you cant agree to an extension? And if you can guarantee a cup, is it worth it if you lose him anyway? And if you do win a cup, can he then be persuaded to stay on board after the fact?

Every team in the NHL operates under a salary cap. Chevy has shown that he can get elite talent like Scheifele and Ehlers to sign her for 6 million per. I don't see any team paying Tavaraes more than McDavid. Even if we do have to sign him and lose Wheeler, than so be it. How many playoff games have we won with Wheeler in the line-up anyway? I like Wheeler and I do understand he is in his early thirties. Is this his career year, perhaps?

Also as far as holes on defense are concerned. Name me all the "all-star" talent that the Penguins had on their backend the last two years they won the cup. If we get a shot at Tavares, we take it.

I am sure that Snow is just sitting there and saying to himself "I want Winnipeg's second pairing defenseman plus an overpriced third line centre for my franchise centre."

Lonely Jets fan here living in Leafs Nation. HaHa! #headsexplodealloverthesix if JT signed or was traded to the Jets! You should have seen the giant hard on TO media had when Stamkos threatened to sign with the Leafs a few summers ago. Every sportscaster couldn't hide their orgasmic state. Even Mayor John Tory made a pitch to Stamkos. Would be fun for me for bragging rights at work but I speculate JT isn't going anywhere!

Lowry gets my vote by a country mile and will get every other persons vote on here. You could phone every NHL GM and ask the question Lowry or Dano and the answer would be 100% Lowry. If they were phoned and said you can have Dano for free most GM's would say no unless they were desperate becuase of injuries or needed AHL help.

A: Snow isn’t very bright. He’ll probably think Little is still an elite 2C, and Myers is tall.
B: Better to get our stuff than nothing. Those two also wouldn’t be the whole trade.

As far as Tavares . The ultimate goal is the won the Stanley Cup. After that its a free pass for a while. Chevy would be stupid not to try. I still say it would take next years first round pick, Nik Petan, a guy like Copp or Lowry , and maybe a future second round pick.....and be totally worth it. We are not looking for him to sign here beyond this year.

As far as the Isles. Snow gets potentially nothing at the end of the season for Tavares or Tavares could sign there agains after the season. In the meantime he's smart to get these type of assets.

That all being said trading away quality players like Myers and Little is just plain dumb. Its too costly for the franchise.

So it appears 100% of the vote went to Lowry. No surprise there.
