I know you guys don't mean it that way. It's merely that there are others I don't trust to not take this narrative and build it up into more than that. This has just happened with too many real, tangible NHL players and that sort of stuff is always how it starts.

Development often isn't linear and that fact needs to be respected if this fanbase it to prove it has really turned a corner.

I agree that he hasn't been the effective player we've come to know since his rookie season, but I'm glad he's at least rebounded from his awful form in the opening two months of the season.

No way he learned his moves here. All of the posters here would have done things differently and would make way better NHL GM's

On a different topic. I have never been a parent nor ever had kids but I have seen lots of movies and TV shows about the subject and read some books so I would be a way better parent than anyone who posts here and could easily second guess any decisions they have made regarding their children using my super power hindsight.

Don’t need be considered an “expert” for any of these.

Hell, even the Reinhart deal, u can see how griffin was falling down their depth chart for some reason with even the slightest detective work.

But yeah, there’s a bunch of minor moves that he made that have had far less impact on the organization that some experience woulda went a long way to getting done. (Maroon, benning, cammy etc) how much of that is him or scouts etc I dunno

I’m not saying I could do better. Obviously there’s a huge number of things in a gms job description that only someone with some sort of experience could accomplish.
Just saying I wouldntve made those aforementioned big moves. And the on I’ve product would be better for it.

I think most posters here could honestly do a better job... It's hard to imagine doing worse. Chia has zero negotiating skills and is borderline insane, as is evident on actual video footage of him making the Seguin trade, as well as discussing future contract negotiations.

I still can't get over when he publicly stated that he would match any offer sheet on Draisaitl... What a (frank)ing brain-dead thing to say. I was trying to give Chia the benefit of the doubt before those comments, but that completely changed my mind on him, and that's when I realized that the guy truly is a (frank)ing moron.

No team was going to offer sheet Draisaitl more than what he got... When you take into account production, the salary cap, and (most importantly) the compensation to be paid by the team offering up the offer sheet, it just wasn't going to happen. Chia publicly stating that only gave Draisaitl's agent leverage, as he knew he could shoot for the moon with Chia running things... Chia's mouth is one of the main reasons why Draisaitl was overpaid by about 1.5 million per season.

Great fuking post !

I actually edited/qualified my post before I saw this talking about parts of a gms job that aren’t spoken of often like the day to day activities, delegating etc. And yeah, I’m sure those require some experience and know how. Fair enough

But the real crux of his job is exactly as u stated. Attempting to put the best possible product on ice. And considering the huge missteps he’s made that have significantly set us back, the fact pretty much remains that most couch gms with half a brain at the very least wouldntve done worse in those team building responsibilities.

“ I’ve got another year to resign Connor. I’d love to get it done ASAP so i can prepare my cap going forward, but maybe if I don’t sign him before draisaitl as well as giving leons agent a ton of leverage, I won’t have to give ld a huge contract that he hasn’t earned just yet”

And I thought of all of this without even going to Harvard. Crazy, I know

100%

The main thing I've learned over the last few years (mostly because of my line of work) is that too much credit is often given to those who hold impressive positions... I think that's exactly what we're seeing with Chia. Some may say, "ehhhhh he's the GM, so he must know more than you or I or he wouldn't have that position to begin with"... That couldn't be further from the truth.

That was a monumental fail on Chiarelli’s part. I don’t know how the average fan like you or I can think of these things, but a veteran NHL GM can’t seem to think about it. I remember even discussing this exact subject with a good buddy and saying that we’d better sign Leon first, so his contract isn’t inflated by the value of Connor’s. Like WTF??? Something so simple can cost us dearly in a salary cap system. What’s he gonna give Nurse this offseason if he keeps playing this way the second half? I hope by playing Maroon with McDavid again, we’re gonna build up his value and trade him and not inflate his value and then resign him. He’s a selfish player that takes stupid penalties. He’s slow as (frank) too. I like the guy but we can’t pay everybody a McDavid bonus. (frank) this team!!!

Fine with him honestly, especially with the prospect of Maroon wanting maybe more than 4m+ (trade him while we can if that is the case)?

Problem is, his contract. How much will he want? 6m? He could probably get 7m+ in UFA. If we can get the assurance that he will resign for maybe 6m for 6 years? I'd be fine with the move, but only if that is the case.

Maroon might be involved if a trade was made (makes the most sense to me considering both players are LW's, pending UFA's, but of course one is way more skilled than the other). Buffalo will probably want our pick for this year (probably gonna be a top 10 pick from the looks of it in a solid draft year), which will be hard to give up imo. Maybe get them to pick up Russell's tab if that is the case? He's had some offence to show this season, so might as well sell high while we can. Still, though, ELC contract's are worth their weight in gold to us at this point... plus I'd like to see us draft Farabee in the upcoming draft. Think he is going to be a great player.

But the bigger problem is, Chia will probably give up RNH and our first for just him. Just cause.
