But that's what Gardiner already is. And he's younger. And creates more offense. And isn't injured. And doesn't have a NMC. And costs slightly less. - Unholy_Goalie

That's an exaggeration and doesn't take into account his positive attributes.
Gardiner is 2nd in assists and points among Leaf defenders and he's been on the ice for 49 goals for and 42 goals against. Could he give the puck away less? Absolutely, but, he's still more positive than he is negative. Last year, he was on the ice for 109 goals for and only 58 against. That's where we'd like to have him but players have up and down years. |

Last year, he was their best. And if you compare him to guys like Burns, Keith, Doughty, Karlsson; he had less giveaways than all of them. This year, he's taken a step back but at 27 years old, his best years could still be ahead of him. |

He would need to be paired with a solid stay at home dman
Are there any of those left? |

Stay at home, in the NHL today, means you're chasing the play instead of controlling it. The game has changed. You need guys that can pass and skate otherwise you're letting the other team dictate the play. This is why Polak and guys like him suck. |

Complete D are nice to have. If Gardiner was one he would easily be a top pairing D. Sadly he isn't, Which makes him a good second pairing D.
It's pretty crazy how everyone expects only Matthews and Doughtys on this team. Rielly even got a bunch of flak for the past two games even though he was probably the best player on the ice both game

Gards just needs a solid top 4 dman to play with. It would be nice to get one more. Ps. Hainsey has fit in well with Reilly. I never thought Hainsey was this good |

Hjalmarsson is a reliable stop gap until Dermott is ready to play 2nd pair LD - mr.sir
I wanted him in the summer, however I think the Hawks knew more than Arizona did. And that is he has a lot of mileage on him and with the type of game he plays it's catching up to him.
I was pretty curious that the Hawks took an unappealing package for him. Now I know why.
I still wouldn't mind him at a low cost. Probably a really good 5 who can PK |

I really like Z, not with Gardiner though.
I wish Z and Gards split time on the PP. |

Gardiner just needs better decision making. Last year, he was great. This year, he's trying too hard.
Hainsey is decent but he's not perfect either. He's been on the ice for plenty of goals against and gives the puck away plenty too. He's basically Hunwick. Not great, not terrible, just alright. |

(frank) Gardiner.
If you don't think he sucks then you suck at evaluating hockey players. |

And now they're pissed off at Babcock because he doesn't do the lineup like they would. Lol @ Laffs fans. |

You can tell Kadri has dropped quite a bit down the pecking (naturally) order since the kids arrived. 19 games with 1pt and not much is being said about him in the media.
Him, Marner and Nylander need to get their crap together for the 2nd half (goal scoring wise).
Andersen too, he hasnt been bad but isnt stealing games lately...and with our D, he needs to. |

3 expiring contracts and 1 garbage player for a 21 year RFA with one more year, an upcoming UFA and a dman with 2 more years of contract.
Ya not gonna happen at all. |

Even last year he made some stupid on ice decisions...just not as many. He's simply not a smart hockey player.
Hainsey has been one of our better Dmen overall this season. Better then hunwick and a pleasant surprise |

Gardiner gives the puck away up ice, making plays. I'll take that over a guy who can't skate it out or make a clean pass, and rims it off the glass every time; rinse and repeat. |
