“I think we’re getting there. I think we’re getting closer. I think the biggest problem a team like Calgary has and Treliving has is you want to make a deal where you don’t rob yourself. Like what happens if you trade say a defenseman for a winger, and he doesn’t think his defense is as good. I think that’s his biggest problem.

I know we don’t need another LW but since the beginning of the season I don’t recall one rumor where we were targeting an RW. It appears to me that flames Management has confidence to potentially shift someone to the right side.

So of the players that the flames have apparently shown interest in:

Matt Duchene (C, LW)
Kyle Turris (C)
Mike Hoffman (C, LW)
Zack Smith (C, LW)
Evander Kane (LW)
Max Pacioretty (LW)

So last 2 games we have had scouts at the leafs game. This is obliviously debatable, if we we’re scouting Ottawa or Columbus and odds are it is Ottawa. As many have mentioned on here Stone would be the ultimate prize, however by all accounts Ottawa is not trading him.

Toronto however is looking for a defencemen who’s preferably a right handed shot.

I wonder if a deal for JVR could be struck assuming he removed us from his no trade list if that is in fact true.

Brodie for JVR? (Seems early similar to the Larson for Hall trade. Brodie has a great contract and despite all the criticism he gets he’s still a very good defenceman)

Preferably Stone and say Fox for JVR but I don’t think that Toronto wouldn’t be interested. I prefer not to go after rentals like everyone else, but I have confidence that if a deal could be struck that BT would do his best to keep him around.

Johnny, Money, Ferland
JVR, Backlund, Tkachuk
Bennett, Jankowski, Hath
Versteeg, Brouwer Frolik

no. Leave the team alone! Leave Brody alone! Yeah he has had his troubles this year but really it's one year. prior th this season guys on this site we're loving him and his friendly contract. Jvr yeah is playing fairly good right now , but last year sucked ball sac! Not a chance anybody would like that trade!what the flames need to do is gain depth without removing too much off the roster maybe lazar, bartowski, but we will need guys like Brouwer, stajan,Brody versteg. Come playoff time. Veterans are valuable. What they need to do is start to stalk pilling second rounders again.

All fair points! Obliviously when things are good there is no reason to tweak or mess with the team. Especially if we are not a contender!

Or are we?

I don’t know if the NHL is in the same phase as the NFL right now, but it appears to me there is becoming a shift in the balance of power.

Chicago
Anaheim
Pittsburgh

Just to name a few of the big guns that are starting to trend down. Look who’s at the top! Out of all the teams in the standings that are currently ahead of us; 3 teams I would be most worried to play against would be:

Tampa
Nashville
St. Louis

The rest of the teams we would have had success with and we would have as good of a shot as any to beat them.

I am not advocating for any trades, although I do find them fun to discuss, I’m just trying to explain why the flames have been linked to almost every big name that has become available this year.

I know most would say it’s because BT is just doing his job and more than likely that’s all it is. Or maybe the management sees a great deal of upside to this team and feels one more big move could put us over the edge.

The facts is we haven’t seen this good of goaltending since Kip, our defense is starting to click, and our top 3 lines are playing great.

Go Flames! 4-3 Chucky gets the shootout winner

Things are starting to click. But I will be a believer when things start to consistently click they find that killer instant to put the puck in the net in the 3rd.

Not being negative but this team still has to find that next level IMO.

They need to do something. They're spending too much on their back end, and they have guys ready to play in the NHL with no room. I doubt Brodie gets traded during the season, but they should try and trade him for a package of picks similar to what they gave up for Hamonic.

At the very least, Andersson should make the team next year. Keep the other five guys and move Stone up to play with Hamonic, and they're saving 3.5 million in cap space and shouldn't really be any worse.

Then there's Fox. If he decides he wants to play in the NHL next year, the Flames don't have a spot for him, and there's probably a bunch of teams out there that would give him a better shot at playing next year.

I agree - it's hard to consider moving a Dman in-season - unless you are addressing a real need and have confidence in the farm. Team hasn't shown much confidence in Kylington yet, and he's the likely Brodie/Kulak replacement given the L/R pairings, so I agree that this is very unlikely.

As for Fox/Kyl/Ras, they are going to enter the league on bottom six minutes. I would sooner move one or both of Kulak/Stone out the door than Brodie.

The Flames have had good luck with getting their college prospects to play a year of pro (Gillies, Foo) , and Fox will likely want/need a year of pro first, so I think next year, we might see Kulak/Andersson as the third pairing, and a new home found for Stone. If Fox progresses in just a year (or less), that's perfect for considering for either bringing in a haul for him, or sending Hammer on his way at the end of his deal.

The return for Brodie would be a lot more, they'd be saving an extra 1.5 million, and I think they would benefit from having a steady second pairing instead of the massive swings they get out of them now.

I don't hate Brodie, but he's been more of a detriment than an asset the last year and a half.

Maybe it's all a moot point anyway, and they never lose again and don't have to make any changes.

I am just not sure you trade Brodie until one of the young guys takes the spot, I think they trade Stone First.
