We had some pretty good teams . For some stupid reason, muckler kept starting fuhr who was over weight and not hasek.

Eventually muckler caught on.
So how that overrates pat?

No one ever compared him as a captain to messier.

Waiting for an example still. He was a good captain. How is that overrating him?

Did he crash a truck a week after signing drunk?

It's a damn good thing social media wasn't a thing back in the early 90's, both Buffalo teams would be in the spot light all the damn time

Sure, but he isn't deployed like a 2nd line center
- sbroads24

Well we dont have a 3rd line checking center or a 4th line center.

Judging by who led their team to a Stanley Cup as a captain, I'd say that this conversation is over.
- BeadyEyedDouche

Lafontaine was a great player

If he is healthy and a Sabre in 99 that team wins the cup

However Peca was a much better leader

he chirped a little at the refs

that was about it

just sat on the bench when losing like every other player

it was the mogilny-lafontaine show for points but the leaders on those teams were

bodger
may
wood
sweeney
hannan
peca
barnaby

etc

hell dawe was more of a captain

- homiedclown

He lead by his play on the ice.
To somehow say he is more overrated than yesterdays list of

Johan hetch
Barnes
Ott
Vanek
Even pommer

That was the original point.

Beady at 6 years old remembered that he was a bigger overrated captain than this group

Oh my god, you aren't kidding.

All the stories from the security guards working the hotels the Bills stayed at during the 4 straight....

First loss was a fluke (Though, according toThomas, it was Jim "Wanting to be the man" that lost that game, not Norwood). Washington obliterated us. But it's really no wonder they lost against Dallas both times.

Right, but my point is that his production is vastly over rated.

He produces 5 on 5 like a 3rd liner, and for being a "Selke" caliber defensive center, is part of the worst defensive teams between here and COL.

He just isnt that good.

my honest opinion, on sabres captains in the 80's and 90's

the worst ones were gilbert, patty, rammer and mogilny

the best ones were
foligno, ruff, peca

it's not that they were bad players, just quiet that did their job very well as a player on the ice

the folignos, ruffs, and pecas were players not afraid to get dirty, or stir up some sh!t to get the team fired up

just my 2 cents

Barnes was a better captain for Buffalo, not a better player. LaFonataine has shown numerous times he lacks heart; He always takes his ball and goes home.

I seem to remember saying that year we rotated captains is the worst captaincy the Sabres ever had and all those players fall under that.

I said LaFontaine was overrated, and the way you came flying in here demanding a reason is all the proof I need. OVERRATED. Not worst, mind you.

Again, as a player, for the community, wonderful. As a leader and in terms of heart?

He failed.

You're confusing the definition of overrated

Nobody thinks Ott, Hecht or Vanek were great captains

Lafontaine was a great hockey player not a question about it but being a great hockey player doesn't mean you're a great captain/leader

I will give you an example

Lafontaine was always known as a great guy outside of the locker room especially with the community. He spoke at Bishop Timon and my grandfather introduced him to the audience.

My grandfather was one of the founders of the Fed Hockey Leauge.

Lafontaine was very respectful of my grandfather, he shook his hand and called him Mr Panek.

My grandfather was very close with a bunch of Sabres personnel.

I know him and Anderchuk had legit issues with each other which lead to Dave being traded.

- Stripes77

That's nice to hear. Do you feel he was overrated as a captain?

No one really put him up that high to consider him overrated.

He was a great dude the few times I met him.
Once during the strike, he sat down and had a few beers with us at otooles on maple. He was totally down to earth and a good leader

The AFC was such a joke back then

If the Bills win the first one they don't go to 4 straight, they'd be hung over the next 3 seasons and probably head back in like 94/95

How does sitting down with a bunch of guys having a beer or two make someone a good leader?

Fact is he cared more about what people out side of the team thought about him.

Peca was a far better leader.

Does that make lafontaine an overrated leader?

I never heard anything about pat not being a good captain until today on this board by someone who wasn't old enough to form an opinion.

La la was one of the best, most exciting players to wear a buffalo uniform in either sport.

The negativity is ridiculous.

Talk about a friggin lazy ass player. Guy was awesome in front of the net...that was it. He absolutely sucked everywhere else on the ice WHILE IN BUFFALO.

I think we were comparing overrated.
Mainly more recent.

Hecth
Ott
Vanek
Barnes
Pommer

Where do you rate patty in comparison to this group.
Also suprised about #11. The original captain.
Sure he was quiet, but he comanded respect from the officials, other teams and our players

Foligno, ruff and Peca
Definitely 3 of the best

the pecas, ruffs, and folignos did
