Honestly, I thought you were joking, hence the "lol".

Your previous post makes sense, but I include tanking years as being rebuilding years.

- rmiethaner

I think it's semantics more than anything. But what is irrefutable is that we're in year 3 of trying to win.

Yeah the Pegulas have done a fantastic job bringing events here, but I think it's reached a saturation point.

Combine
Draft
Combine
WJC
Various USA hockey events

That combined with the terrible Sabres, the resurgent Bills and terrible weather really killed momentum for this. I have a good amount of friends and family who 5 years ago would have talked about this event nonstop, and it didn't even register this year -- myself included

- jcragcrumple

Loved watching the games but can’t stand the money grabbing, parking, tickets, concession... it amature hockey, come on! and the event times where just DUMB...

Everyone has their own opinion on when it started, but I go along with when Darcy gave his "Their will be pain speech," after Parise and Sutter said no thank you to coming here.
- sskkoo1

Yeah, but Darcy never really implemented a plan, he was fired, then they tanked. Really, they've been rebuilding since Briere and Drury left.

I agree.

It actually started with the "Sabres fans should get used to some suffering" line.

Or, the Gaustad trade.

But, now the question is, are we still trying to win? Because this is a tank roster.

It wasn't that expensive. Maybe the non-USA or Canada games were a little pricey for interest, but again, you could get into just about any game for $20, even USA or Canada. The outdoor game was the most expensive, and they got 44,000 plus in there.

You asked a serious question. I gave you a serious answer. How anyone can say it's been 5 years when the first 2 of those years they literally tried to lose is crazy.
- Wetbandit1

re-building started when they made the first big move (kane trade). when you trade out a boat load of assets for established NHLers, you've begun building.

You see that's tough to say. Pegula came in and started throwing money around at UFAs and that's not indicative of a rebuild.

Every US game was at 8 except for the outdoor game (which again drew 44,000) and the semi final. Every other game was at 8. Times were not the issue.

It wasn’t “there will be pain.” It was “there will be suffering.”

Joe Namath called it “struggelling”

If they wanted to fill it though, charge 5 or 10 bucks for GA 300 level. I live on the west side and when you factor in uber to avoid parking, a 10 dollar beer and 2 20 dollar tickets to watch amateur hockey, it's just too much. And then the one game that I wanted to see was at 4 pm.

It was poorly done imo

No doubt, they obviously had no intention of trying to win this year, when they had that start jb didn’t try to trade away/Or for to wake this team up.

Not quite. Rebuild started at the 15 draft. The main piece in that trade was on IR and wouldn’t be able to contribute til the following season. That trade was made to help secure the bottom, which turns out wasn’t the bottom. That’s what you get for trying to push the easy button.

This World Juniors stuff:

We're still Buffalo, NY.

200,000 strong.

Economically depressed.

Main street is still a ghost town.

There's nothing of interest near canalside except canalside itself. No other businesses or establishments except for some bars around the corner.

The Perry Projects are a stone's throw away from the arena.

Saturation is a big part of it and this year the weather certainly factored into it but let's be real.

Buffalo isn't on anyone's radar.

When guys like Crisculo, Griffeth, and Tennyson are on your roster, and then you're only pick ups are Nolan and Wilson you're not serious about winning.

They really pulled the blinds over our eyes this summer, then, because I don't think anyone expected a stealth-tank or "assessment of the roster".

Most people (except a few of us pessimistic I mean realistic posters) expected a bubble team at worst.

Some were even saying a 95-point season was in the cards.

Were they expecting travel from anywhere other than southern Ontario though? I camt imagine anybody making a trip, even to SOCAL to watch amateur hockey for a week

I know plenty of people who easily could have afforded this event/have interest in hockey, but at the price point, and the times the games were played, it wasn't attractive enough to that market

I honestly don't think it's that big of a deal.

Not like they hand out a bronze Stanley Cup to the loser of the finals.

I'd huck it right on the ice if they did.
