The best player ever was a captain and a terrible coach. It means absolutely nothing what kind of player you were to be a good coach. Ruff was a grinder and he's 5th all time in wins. Gretzky had only one season where his team got even half of the points, barely.

Pretty sure Gretzky did most of his talking on the ice. His skill level won games. That's probably why it didn't translate to coaching .

5th most wins also nhl captain who's leadership was the reason he was chosen to be captain. Not so much the skill level.

Phil is not a good coach as of now. 30th in the nhl. Hof and tons of points . Similar to gretzky .
