So, let's assume that Ek's source is accurate. It is very possible that Lou and company do this for every major player who may be available. They work up the cost of acquiring the player and what the effect of removing those assets plus adding the player will have on their long term plans. It makes sense. They would then use this analysis to determine if such a move made sense. So, they could very well could "workshop" scenarios about Tavares and Karlson that could lead to them being in the mix for one of them. Those scenarios could also lead to them not being in the mix.

So, his source could be accurate but Eklund's conclusion that the Leafs WILL be players might be wrong.

Exactly. Agreed. It's not likely and these are Earth shattering deals, they often don't ever happen, but once in a decade you'll see one. They're just rumors, and they always come up, and it's legit. Just like you said though, not likely, let alone to the Leafs. So, his sources are credible, but all he can do is speculate and even he doesn't know what the value would be, that's half the battle lmao.

Going into the field of journalism and already know many of the Sabres and Bills alum in Buffalo as well as many of the credible writers of the area. Just saying, from who I've spoken to, they have nothing but good things to say about Mike & Eklund.

And just playing devil's advocate, if you don't think Eklund is credible, and let's say he wasn't theoretically, than why would someone so credible as Kevin Allen of USA Today who speaks throughout the country and is beyond busy, why would he take his time to do podcasts with Ek, especially if he wasn't credible. Wouldn't waste his time on something like that.

How else do they determine whether or not to pursue the acquisition of such players? However, such analysis does not necessarily mean that they will decide to pursue those players.

Essentially, somebody who works for the Leafs may have told Ek somehting that is going on in the league's front offices right now.
