No formula is needed. The NHL standings are the NHL standings. That's what I go by. The point is that according to past history, 3 point games are a much bigger influence on the standings ultimately than games in hand which will fluctuate up and down and eventually even up.
- MJL

The 3 point game makes it tougher to play catch up but it also makes it easier to collect points with games in hand. If the Flyers were five games back, which is 10 points in the standings, they'd be in trouble. Where they're at now, they are certainly within range of making a playoff push.

Crazy that I was just able to get a pair of tickets for Monday, upstairs of course, for 6.50/each. Sheesh

You can't account for 3 point games in any formula. I agree they're certainly in range but they're further back than it seems.

5 games back could be 10 points, or it could be more than that.

4 points out of a playoff spot on December 16th doesn't sound like a lot, but sadly, it is. When you factor in the need to pass 2 teams in the Metro and all the likely 3 point games between those clubs, making up a 4 point difference is harder than it looks.

It's far from impossible, but the Flyers will need to stay healthy and probably pick up a minimum of 61-64 points in their last 51 games to get that last spot.

I'll be very impressed if they can pull that off.

It's going to come down to how they do in games within the Metro. Most of those games are still on the docket.

They aren't that far back though. Assuming a win tonight and assume their next game is vs either the Rags or the Fishsticks who don't play until then. With a regulation win in that game, they'd be in a playoff spot. Now we have a long way to go, but I'm happy with where they are in the standings. That's not far off pace at all.

Yes, as I've said previously, they're not that far back, that's not in dispute. My only point is that your games formula doesn't work because of the possibility of 3 point games affecting the standings. What games will be 3 point games is unknown so they can't be accounted for. History shows us that the 3 point games make it more difficult to catch up.

I'd qualify that. If you played the same number of games as the team you're trying to catch, that holds but if you have games in hand, you have an edge. I'll take being a point behind with two games in hand over a team I need to catch any day of the week especially with the three point game system.

You could have an edge potentially. You could lose those games in hand. That's really beside the point. Your games system like baseball doesn't work in hockey.

Also doesn't consider ROW

No different than the last few years. Fringe playoff team.

If they make it great. If not I won't be too upset. I wasn't expecting playoffs this year anyway and with their Jeckyll/Hyde performances so far I see no reason to get my hopes up. All I want to see is consistency. If that gets them in the playoffs then that's pretty great.

Let's switch over to a dozen pages on line combos, or on re-signing Wayne Simmonds.

Posting about the standings, line combos, or Wayne Simmonds=hockey related.

Who is ruffled? Do you know what I do when there is a conversation going on or a topic being discussed that I'm not interested in, such as the recent discussion on a TV show? I scroll on past it. Much more productive than commenting that you don't like it or posting what you did.

My schtick is talking hockey, not about posters.
