The good news we won't have any problem fitting Nylander and Marner under the cap.

Their agents aren't idiots. They will try to maximize their payday. I could see Marner taking a bit of a tiny hometown discount but not Nylander or Matthews.

That being said, would you give them 8 years, 6.5 million a year right now or 3 years at 4.5 million and then have them demand 8 years at 10 million a year down the road?

6.5 with the cap going up is chump change.

I'm leaning towards that too. Problem with that becomes, they'd become UFAs at 28 or 29 and there might be a few more years left you want them in their prime and under contract.

Cap is only going to go up so much for so long. The struggling Canadian dollar has also leveled off the cap to a certain extent.

Worry about that in 8/9 years.

Having Matthews, Nylander, Marner, Kadri and Rielly signed for the next 8 years is fine by me. Just wish there was another, better player to put with Rielly to really make that core bullet proof. It's a shame they got (frank) all for Kessel.

Yeah, the 1st rounder the Leafs received in the Kessel deal that went to getting Andersen was worthless.

Andersen or another goalie could have been acquired with or without that pick which was more or less a high 2nd round pick. Whether they gave them 30th or 31st overall wouldn't have mattered and yes, they had 31st overall too.

Kessel should have pulled in something much stronger to help along the blueline like Olli Maata for example. The Leafs got (frank)ed twice with Kessel, once on the way in and once on the way out.

Hopefully Pitts returns the favour if they miss this year
