First of all, Hextall has said he would make a trade if it HELPED SHORT TERM and didn't hurt the future. He has said nothing about NOT hurting now to get future assets .
This is completely in line with what he has said he was doing.
Second, Schenn was used as a wing here he has played quite a bit at center, as recently as last year and did not do well. He always played well with Coots as his center. While here, he has played mostly with G, Jake, Coots and Simmer. He has had ample opportunity to shine here and really hasn't. He has been very streaky.
Two years ago he did not get going until after Luke got shipped out and that lit a fire under his ass.
Last year he played center when Coots got hurt. Didn't really get going til Coots got back and Schenn moved to the wing with Coots.
Now this year, he got traded and whoa, another fire lit under his ass.
He has been very streaky his whole career. Why don't we wait and see what he does for the ENTIRE year before we say he is better than Crosby, Stamkos, McDavid, Kane, etc. He has had a good to months playing with world class talent. Isn't Swartz out for 2 months? What happened to the team his first game out? Shut out, where was Schenn. Great, he had 6 goals in four games. He had ZERO points in 5 tough games before that. Very streaky and needs strong players with him to pull that off.
Now, I always liked Schenn. I was surprised he was traded. I think he would have been a big part of the team this year. Just not at center. They Flyers tried him in all three forward positions and with all of their best players while he was here. If he had played like a Hart trophy candidate while he was here, he might still be here.

No, he would not be playing center here. No, he was NOT a checking center while here. His lack of "checking" at center is why he didn't play center here. Hell, Cousins and Pebs both played center over Schenn last year. He plays defense like a matadore.
